While constructing the 67 GT Equipment Group thread, John reminded me that the "Exterior Decor Group" option has many features that people confuse with the "GT Equipment Group" option.

These are noted in the following chart. Be aware that the term "Base" indicates the starting point for the option, not a "basic car".

Any Mustang, regardless of engine, could have the "Exterior Decor Group" option.

1) 2+2 model has Trunk and Rear Cap Bright Moldings as standard equipment and is not affected by GT or Exterior Decor Group options.

Additionally, the option "Lower Back Panel Grille" was contingent on the "Exterior Dcor Group" option. It could not be ordered alone.

I have a basic understanding but I think my understanding is tainted by poor samples WITHOUT confirmed Marti Reports or build sheets...I wonder if it was a "by itself" "stand alone" or if it required other "basics" in place to be added in a vehicle order form.

The lower back panel grille was a separate, stand alone option, not part of the exterior décor group option.

This is correct. There were two styles of the back panel grille: painted a dark gray, represented by a two digit paint code on the warranty tag (I do not have the color code) and painted body color. As Jeff has found there are known examples of the two digit paint code without the back panel grille. Interestingly, when the dark gray was applied, the panels were in place, thus the tail light panel behind the back  panel grilles was the original body color.

The "lower back panel grille" was a stand alone option for all three models - coupe/vert/2+2.

The "two tone paint" was also a stand alone option, a "dark gray poly" that as Pete mentioned results in a two digit paint code (first digit the body color, second digit being a 5 representing the gray.  For example Q5 would be Brittany Blue with the two tone option.

These options could of course be ordered on the same vehicle.

The exterior décor option is yet again separate and not related to or affected by the lower back panel grille and/or two tone paint options.

That said, if the two tone paint was ordered on a coupe/vert without exterior décor, they would have an issue with the missing bright rear trim.  So that would have to be included.  Either that or exterior décor was required for the two tone paint (but I have never seen that requirement stated anywhere.) These things can get complicated!

Sorry, I appear to be at the mercy of conflicting documentation.
I keep two versions of the 67 Illustrated Facts and Specifications Manual.
While waiting for my DP to harden I wrote this post using the shop version of the booklet, the White Cover version offered by Jim Osborn "MP294".
It lists the "Custom Exterior Trim Group" with the last sentence as "... on Hardtop and Convertible, plus lower back panel grille on 2+2 fastback."
The Blue cover version of the same booklet I have in the study, but by Mustang Monthly Magazine, strips off the portion of the sentence after the comma.

I've never seen many GTs with the rear grill and doubted the veracity of the White Cover version. Sloppy reporting on my part.

I'll update my first post.

By the way, $19.48 for the back panel grill in 1967 is $145.97 in today's money.
