68 Tilt Steering Column Parts
« on: August 18, 2018, 07:12:32 PM »
Hello, I am trying to find the upper u-joint in the Tilt section of a 1968 Stang. Does anyone make a reproduction of this?
Mine is very sloppy! I am in the process of buying the proper tool to take the pivot ass apart but can't seem to find any related stock column replacement parts. i.e... u-joint..

I believe the U-joint is simply a series of 4 ball bearings that you can tighten a lock nut to remove play. Otherwise, you could always check with West Coast Classic cougar.

I believe they have a YouTube video if not them, there are probably videos on YouTube that would help you out.

Thanks 67gtasanjose, I wasn't sure. I had it apart but don't have a tool to remove the pivot pins, so I was unable to get a good look at it. Thats great news if it can be tightened though. I will fab a tool tomorrow and try that. Did look on line though, only seen info on dissembling the pivot pins.
Nothing on any kinda replacement parts.

Definitely check WCC Cougar website, they have pretty much any part for a tilt column.  They also sell improved pins with clips on the ends so they can't back out.

Thanks for all your help, after breaking 3 home made pullers I finally was able to disassemble the pivot assembly and get to the u-joint. Bang on with the tightening up info, It worked great. Still a little of side to side, but much better now.
Seems like its in the bottom tube that the second rod slide into. There was two machined slots in the 2nd rod that I would think a teflon or related sleeves should go? Going to investigate a little more and try and find a parts break down.
May need a wheel alignment too...
Thanks again...

WCCC has a Youtube video on how to remove the pins.
