1968 disc brake caliper date codes?
« on: August 17, 2018, 11:52:19 AM »
I had the calipers that came off my car rebuilt by the local NAPA store, who of course used a subcontractor. In any case I got back the same pair that I gave them and so it seems that part went well. One thing I don't quite understand is the date codes. They are marked "19" and "28" along with FoMoCo cartouche. I checked the library and unless I am missing something there does not seem to be any mention of how to decode this.

1968 W code 427 Cougar XR-7 GTE Feb 23 Dearborn C6 / 3.50 open
1968 R code 428CJ Cougar XR-7 May 13 Dearborn C6 / 3.91 T - Lock

My SWAG would be DOY (day of year) from beginning of year (1-365/366).
Perhaps Jan 18 and Jan 28 in your case?

Agree that it looks like a Julian date pattern and since we have seen this same pattern used on other brake components by the same suppliers I think its a fairly safe bet.

Might want to check for a second (different from the casting date) located as shown in the example below

Is this a date code as well?

If so, can anyone tell me how to decode it?

Part is a caliper support bracket for a 1968 Mustang.

My guess would be the part was forged on the 303rd day of 1967 on the 3rd shift but I'm looking for confirmation.
