Hi,

my Name is Philip and I am from Berlin, Germany.

I always loved Mustangs and started collecting and working on classic cars in 1989 with the age of 12. I still have that Peugeot 504 Coupe (Pininfarina style body). Also included in my collection is a 1979 Mercedes 450 SE.

Back in 2014 I found my dream Mustang in Temple, Texas and had it imported through to Germany.

Sadly since than I had to repaint the car because the doors didnt fit the body (probably aftermarket quality doors).

Also I had to redo the engine twice.

Meaning the original engine that was installed when I bought it was bored out already to its last oversize and therefore couldnt be redone.

I than had another 64 5 bolt engine installed. This engine broke two years later.

Because these engines are so rare I had the engine bored out to 0.40.

Here is some other data to what was done:

my engine is bored out 0.40.
Stroke is 3 inch
Cylinder head volume 56 cc
Effectice Dome Volume +8 cc
Deck Clearance -0.2 mm
Compressed Gasket Thickness 1 mm

Compression Ratio is 9.95:1
Total Displacement 307.06

It has Aluminum Edelbrock headers.
Bbrand new Scott Drake 4 Row Radiator
Old Air Products Air Conditioner Compressor
And a 17 inch Fan with 5 Blades from Scott Drake

Also during the years the a new style air conditioning compressor was done and a borgeson steering conversion done.

My main issue however was to keep it as stock looking as possible.

This is why I am also putting back the original air cleaner.

I also installed the colour matching valve covers in gold and had the whole block including the headers painted in black as they were back in 64.

Since the engine was redone I am experiencing some trouble with the engine getting to hot at idle speed .

This occurs after standing at a red light or in traffic for 10 Minutes.
Outside temperatures being round 82 degrees.
This is with ac turned on.

There is no problem with the engine temperature during highway cruising at 70-85 mph with ac on during the same weather conditions.

I was told that a bigger 3 1/2 inch shroud would help in this situation.

Right now I only have a small 1 inch shroud installed with a gap to the radiator as can be seen on the pictures.

Can you therefore please answer me the following two questions:

1. Which shroud was was originally installed on a automatic transmission car with ac from 64-66?
2. Will a 3 1/2 inch shroud help with the engine overheating at idle speed?

Enclosed some pics of my engine compartment.

Thanks alot for your help.

There was only one 'correct' fan shroud for 65-66 V8 cars that would have required one.  (A/C or K codes)

Looks like the one installed is the correct one.

Have you measured the real temperatures on the engine, like with an infrared gun?  This would confirm that the gauge and sensor are reading correctly.  Measure on both sides of the thermostat housing to determine if the t-stat is opening properly.

Just as a side note - since someone will point it out at some point. The CAUTION FAN decal would not have been originally installed
