67 289 Drivers Side Valve Cover Breather Neck Discussion
« on: July 31, 2018, 03:27:28 PM »

Thanks Richard and Jeff!
Makes sense that a lot can hapen over a time period of 50+ years ::)
concerning the filler pipe : is it the entire length of the filler pipe that is bare metal?
or just the length were the tube is pulled over, and the 'knee'/turn is painted towards the breather cap itself?
Kind regards,
Jeroen

MOD NOTE: This thread was split from another thread on 67 breather caps

Which bottom does it have? Twist on or slip over?

The correct one is a twist-on tube with a gasket.
...concerning the filler pipe : is it the entire length of the filler pipe that is bare metal?

The whole thing is bare steel (except the gasket ;) )

The correct one is a twist-on tube with a gasket.

Think he has just the breather and is trying to figure out what it's for.  If it's for the tube style then it would be a slip on without a gasket if the breather is a twist on for valve covers without the tube but instead the notched hole in the valve cover, then its a twist on.

Think we're confusing things by adding in the tube to the discussion ;)

Can't assume Bill's is from/for any specific year at this point and may be a service replacement to explain the Autolite markings but we'll see

Richard,
There is a prior thread regarding the paint on the filler neck. I believe it was left at it was painted, but had a mask applied over the top part where the breather cap pushed on.  Search for 67 289 engine paint.
Thanks,
John

Yes, I remember the thread. The one image Jeff used combined with language written ("I believe..." by Jeff) suggests that there isn't a 100% definite agreement on that detail. I do see other threads for other years that support Jeff's belief along the lines of having a mask. It rather looks like Ford was transitioning to the later (68-up design) spin-on cap during the 66-67 model years so in my thinking, either scenario can be possibles. Currently, I do not believe the PCV grommet was in place at the time the engine was painted, this leads me to my thinking the breather extension tube (aka oil filler pipe) may very well have been installed after engine paint.  I suppose at this time at least or till other "known as original examples" are confirmed one way or the other, this detail could go either way.

I would define the statement that I didn't have any documentation, close up of the paint edge to suggest either way or anything else at the time the statement was written but based on what I have seen over the years that was my belief at that time.

Did get a 66 289 assembly instructions the other day. Should find time to read through it to see if the breather neck is mentioned in the painting instructions. Later versions I have of other engines will not help since they didn't have the necks

PS - May separate the neck discussion off from the breather cap discussion to keep things neat :)  So don't be surprised

Thank you all for your answers and help!
Here is a picture of my current filler neck.
It's not painted over a 'distance' off 26mm, measured from the top side of the filler neck.
does it make sense?
Kind regards,
Jeroen

Here's a couple of breather neck pics from my SJ 67 C code, Nov 66 build.  No reason to think the filler tube was ever repainted; but cannot verify either way.  Perhaps the bare steel top section is a result of repeatedly removing and reinstalling the breather cap over 50 years.

Looks very similar to Fastback2013's.

My Dec 66 SJ C code came with stamped valve cover without the "breather neck".  The Autolite breather cap is twist-on with gasket.   I have to say that I've never seen a 67 with a breather neck such as the ones pictured here.  That said, I don't go around shows and take off the caps ;)  Mine is a Cleveland built level 15 engine.

Any idea as to which engines had the breather neck design, and which didn't?  Is it easy to tell the difference with pictures taken from a standing position?

The Mannel guide only shows the non-breather neck type on page 7-22, no mention of a breather neck style

I have only seen a twist-on cap on 68-up but the majority of my experience on unrestored examples was in Southern California so these typically would have been closed emission examples. I am no expert pn the open emission option for 67's but I am simply stating that John D., I would think you would also expect to have the neck as shown in this discussion, even though it is an "Open Emission" option, you would simply have a black painted Push-On oil cap breather (with NO hose nipple). As discussed in the other threads this discussion was split from, a "Closed Emission" system would have a breather hose connection with a 90 degree turn-up on it.

Hard to see in the two pictures attached (San Jose built, open emissions option), but the cap typically had the sticker on original examples. The owner of this restored example is an MCA judge also and quite probably will recognize his car in these pictures and offer perhaps better information.

Moving back to the discussion of "Is the oil filler breather extension originally painted or bare steel", evidence seems to be lending to Jeff's suggestion that the filler pipe was installed while engine was painted. I have no problem duplicating that when I go to painting the engine if that is the consensus.

The Mannel guide only shows the non-breather neck type on page 7-22, no mention of a breather neck style

Paragraph 7F1 on p. 7-22 Mannel says that the 1967 standard open crankcase ventilation system used a twist-on breather cap with AUTOLITE logo stamping. (No breather/filler neck).

See Mannel Chapter 6/1966, paragraph 6F4 on p. 6-28 for a discussion about the 289 closed ventilation system, with a twist-on filler neck and slip-on breather cap with hose attached.  From the information available, this 1966 design carried over to 1967 production of Closed Crankcase Emission System 289 engines.

My SJ '67 C code (30 Nov 66) has a Level 15 Windsor engine with the closed ventilation system and internal Thermactor passages in the cylinder heads.  It has the twist-on filler neck (pics in Reply #8).  The breather cap is the slip-on type, black paint, turn up hose spout with the block FoMoCo logo stamping.

I am ended my previous statement since my experience is mostly, if not all based upon "Closed Emission" systems in 67 examples, therefore more likely to be in error than Bob Mannel's manual may be.
