Oct 64 SJ Engine Bay Decal Placements and Types Please?
« on: July 20, 2018, 08:07:51 PM »
Hi folks,
Can someone help me with original photos of how the decals were positioned at SJ around 20 Oct 64?
Apologies in advance because it's a bit of a list but I'm trying my best to do it right.
So Im after positions for these decals please:

1. Air Cleaner Service Instructions

2. Autolite Spark Plug - Straight one is the correct one right?

3. Battery OK - Im also interested in the stamps/markings that were put on the Battery OK decal and wether or not the decal itself should be printed in black or blue?

4. Oil filler cap - again, which one should I use the yellow/brownish one or the white and red one?

5. "E2" and "P" decals - Did SJ use these?

6. Service Decal - should I use the early or later one?

7. Koni shock absorbers

8. Crankcase ventilation system

9. Cooling System (On Radiator support panel)

10. A/C Filter / Dryer C4AA-19959-B

Any help here would be truely appreciated guy and gals.

Thanks in advance,

Dan.

Well we can start by at least eliminating the need for a couple of the list.

3- Battery inspection decal would have been the one with the black printing

5- The square inspection stickers like you listed were not typically used at San Jose

7- Konis would not have been original to the car so now stickers.

9- Have never found a cooling system sticker applied to the radiator support on a 65 San Jose car

Now to the rest

6. Service Decal - should I use the early or later one?

Earlier one but not the very early one ;)

Will look at some more pictures

Difficult to find good examples from specific periods of time and specific plants but here is what I have on a couple of other details. Using projected build dates we're looking at cars around 140xxx - 152xxx in general terms

Closest I have from around that period is from 5R07C131xxx. It shows the cubic inch, crankcase and what appears may have been the white replacement parts decals

Have a much later example with the cubic inch and crankcase decals in the exact same locations (5R07C2290xx) So it suggests some consistency.

Have pictures of unrestored cars in the general area but it seems that though unrestored the owners chose to update the decals - originals were likely in poor condition and they made the choice  :(

Never recall seeing (nor found any pictures)  a sticker on an assembly line oil breather cap - that plant and time period

Going to move the thread over to the general 64 1/2-66 part of the site   8)

Hey Jeff,

Figure I ask as well since my car is also within that time frame, do you know if the Autolite spark plug decal was also on the side of the air cleaner on the driver side on those examples?  Also both examples you show are C codes, I assume the same would hold true for A codes as well?

No they do not nor any indication that they were ever there. No paper or adhesive remains. Have many more nice examples from 65 Dearborn and in those examples the Autolite decal on the drivers side of the base looks to have started in Jan 1965 production so far.

NOTE: Did find later a much earlier example with the Autolite rectangle shaped decal on the base - drivers side but that was on a Dearborn example

If we go on the idea that the same workers who put on the decals on all air cleaners at the same plant during the same time period.

Two more questions, the honey gold fastback you have pics of, do you remember how that air cleaner was set up or was that not available?  Also looking at the crankcase decals offered, there appears to be two colors available, a reddish color and an orange color.  Looking at the pics I can't tell what color they were....

Didn't include any pictures of that air cleaner in that picture thread because the owner (shame since it was such an original car) had changed it out for a Hipo style.

Likely one of the reproducers has it wrong or off based on what they saw or what the decal maker provided. Looked through everything I have at the moment and can't help.  Might be closer to the color used for the cubic inch decal but that might be a stretch of a guess and at this point nothing more than a guess

Sorry we can't always be exact or have every answer and detail. Somethings remain unknown or uncertain at least for now but that is better then Making giant leaps and assumptions  or even making stuff up

Jeff,

Was doing some google searches and came across this thread, is that another picture of 5R07C131?

Looks like there was a decal on the side of the air cleaner base perhaps??

Its not - seems to be a reflection, light issue of sorts since pictures of the drivers side of the air cleaner shows nothing there and my comment clearly states

"Unrestored could not find an original with a decal on the oil breather nor one with the AUTOLITE spark plug decal but judges will be looking for both"

So still consistent on that since 9 years ago
