Saw an original-owner '65 fastback at Fab Fords Forever.
« on: July 20, 2018, 03:50:34 PM »
I met a gentleman at Fabulous Fords Forever car show in Buena Park, CA., this year with a 1965 Mustang fastback he bought new in So. Cal.  It had never been through a re-paint, or interior upgrade, or major mechanical work.  It was a gorgeous, low mileage, car, to say the least.  But since I'm in the middle of painting my '65 fastback, I paid particular attention to the black in the engine bay, and the black on the dash, and to my eyes they were the identical "sheen" of a mild, low-gloss black color.  And looked great.  I talked to my painter and he thinks Ford applied a lacquer to the Mustangs dash, but a tougher enamel to the engine compartment.  And he said the two blacks--engine compartment and dash--were pretty much identical-appearing, i.e., both were a "diminished" low-gloss black.  I'd appreciate hearing from anyone with more information on this, specifically did Ford lay down the same black "sheen" on both the engine compartment and the dash on the '65 Mustangs coming off the line in San Jose?  My painter awaits my instructions.  Lol. As always, many thanks for any comments.  Ron...

Dash paint was mixed to a specific formula.  Engine bay paint seemed to have some variance.  We see original cars with more gloss than others.

I would go by the paint code for the interior paint, even with black.  On the engine bay, I would use a regular black and flatten it to the desired gloss.  Usually somewhere between matte and semi-gloss.
