67 Fiberglass rear quarter panel extensions (caps)
« on: July 02, 2018, 02:20:13 PM »
I don't usually cross-post across forums, but I'm still looking.
I suspect his area of my car was dismantled at one time by others, so I don't want to use the parts I removed without validation.
I have the 67 Shelby Master Assy Manual but the information on the rear cap installation to body  is sparse. Page 31 lists the components to assemble the rear end caps to the body, but there are many blanks and issues.

The '1.B' bolts [attachment bolts of cap to body] are listed as 378190-S2 which are not found in Jim's hardware list. This may be a misprint and may actually be 378196-S2. I have lots of the later as they are simply small tooth washer bolts, like those used on the trunk hinge.

There is a "Seal, Felt" listed that is supposed to go between the small tooth washer bolt and the body. It's listed as a 380002-S (washer with plastic washer), which AMK simply lists as a washer. Something amiss here with either AMK or it's a washer I've never seen.
I suspect SA may have just used black strip caulk around the washer/bolts since they used a metric ton of the stuff to seal the rear taillight area.

And then the three screws on the bottom tail of the cap which screw the tail to the body. These are badly displayed in the manual as a '1.D'  (376362-s #6x1/2)  screw, but that seems odd given where they go. Plus since they are bare I would think something better than S or even S2 as the caps are painted prior to installation and not on the car.

The car is going in for paint in the next few weeks ...

As far as the attaching bolts you will find an example of an original example below which matches a number of other examples I have. Typically I've not see visible sealer around the bolts on allot of original examples. On a couple I've seen visible sealant around one mounting bolt other than every so often you might find shat looks like a splatter of sealant (course flat threads of sealant pointed outward from under the bolt).

Will look through more pictures. Have plenty that have not been labeled and adjusted for size   ::)

Great pic as usual, Jeff. Thanks.

That bolt head mark is odd. It looks a bit like the concentric circles of an 'ER', but the 'spokes' have me stumped.
But since the predominant original fasteners of this type on my car are "==" I should be safe to use those here?

I mean it's not like someone would get in the trunk and take a pic, right? ;)

Safe, correct, original? No.

Remember that the double hash was what was being used at San Jose but the caps were installed at Shelby. No reason to expect that they would have the same markings as other items do in the trunk.

Not saying that this particular head style was the only one used during the whole production year. The picture and another half dozen or more that are handy that show the same markings are all earlier cars. But even on later cars I would not expect to see the same as used at San Jose

Ok, what is that head style then?

It appears to be an ERW variant.

RBW marked was typical from my observations. P/O finish.

I meant RBW, but somehow  the ER from my previous post got in there! Can you catch dyslexia?
Thanks Jeff and Bob.

Sye.
I promise to be politically correct in all my posts to keep the BBBB from vociferating.
