front suspension bumpers C6OA-3025-A
« on: June 21, 2018, 07:48:03 PM »
GRRRrrrrr!

I just got some "Daniel Carpenter", "same as FORD" front suspension stoppers in a minute ago....Made in China, and the mounting stud is 1/4" METRIC! NOT 5/16" so NOT "same as FORD".

It REALLY gets old dealing with this nonsense EVERY ... time ...

(*Note on edit:I discovered the stud that looked like 1/4" fine thread was METRIC with a 10mm socket sized nut)

The quote above is from lounge post: http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=18349.0.

Richards horror story above got me thinking about the front suspension bumpers, C6OZ-3020-A, which is the part I'm assuming he is talking about.  Anyway I recall that my originals were like hanging chads when I got the car, so in 1981 went to my Ford dealer and bought NOS ones.  I noted that they did not have the Ford part number embossed on the rubber...but otherwise were identical.

Fast forward to junkyard hunting, and I found a nice pair of originals for my car.  The embossed part number is C6OA-3025-A  However, when I look in the MPC I see C6OZ-3020-A.  There is no line item for 3025 in the MPC, just 3020.  I'm assuming that this is an engineering part number on the actual part.   The MPC states they cover 1967-1969 Mustangs, with 1970 going to a C9 part, probably part of the "big suspension" redesign. They are also on 66-68 Fairlane and Falcon.  I found them on a 66 Mercury intermediate.

Has anyone noticed this on the front suspension bumpers?

Mine say 'F.O. 53'.
Judging by the nut, it's been on there a while. It has the correct shape. It is the Comp suspension, however.

The parts car has some weird, square bumpers on it.

My "known original" (for as long as I have had the car, 1978) have "F.O. 78" on one and "F.O. 148" on the other. 5/16" fine thread tapered locking nuts.

Clearly no Ford logos or engineering numbers on these. Mine are split but all of the rubber is there and they have been cleaned thoroughly for inspection.

Interesting.  Isn't it weird though what you remember?  I really recall opening the blue and white Ford box only to be disappointed with the F.O. text and not the C6 like my original (I had one that was in poor shape and the other had fallen off before I bought the car).  I need to find my 1981 parts to get the full text string for reference.  I did find the receipt which is attached.  Ah those were the days, right?

Also attached is the 68 MPC for reference.

I thought I was the only one who kept receipts for 40 years or so. I have a stack of receipts from 1979. ;D

C6OZ-3020-A is the number that would be on the cardboard box containing the part. It is not necessarily the same part that would have been used in production. It is a replacement part, boxed for individual sale. Rarely is the part number in the MPC the same number that appears on a part.

Reason we often refer to one as the part number while calling the other the engineering number just to reference which of the two we're referring to ;)

A thought occurred to me so I compared four different rubber bumpers.  Per the attached picture:

1. The front suspension rubber bumper C6OA-3025-A is the original question - I found several with the part numbers, others have found an F.O. designation, no part number.
2. The 8" pinion bumper with a C4 embossed part number.
3. A triangular shaped rear axle end rubber bumper, no part number
4. A square shaped rear axle end rubber bumper, no part number

So it is a mixed bag, no safe conclusions.

Hi, can I ask a related question - how to mount the rear axle bumpers?
My frame rails are in very poor condition, and the original mountings are actually nonexistent. Do you have any dimension and drawings how should that look like? They are not sold separately and I don't want to spend $300 on complete rear frame rail just for the mountings.

Thanks.

If the bumper brackets where that bad I can only imagine what you frame rails looked like. Assuming you already repaired the damage in the area,my first thought would be to salvage a original part from a wreaked salvage car. Any number of donor cars that are so bad that cutting the frame rail out with the bracket is a option. Research Mustang salvage yards. It might be the most cost effective thing to do in the long run never mind the most original looking alternative. Just a suggestion.

How to mount the bumpers? The end of the rubber bumpers are arrow shaped. As they are pushed in during installation the wings of the rubber bumper are compressed inwards and when they are past the metal edge of the mount they spring out. Think toggle bolt, but in rubber.

He said that the mounting was non existent, so nowhere to stick the barbed rubber bumper.  Bob’s reply was spot on.  I have a beautiful set but they are attached to the rails and I would want to sell the complete assemblies. I know of some in junk yards but no plans to go for at least a few weeks.  If you can edit and have not found them elsewhere send me a PM.

Exactly. Thanks 67gta289 for your previous answer.
The thing is that I am from Europe and in the salvage yards around here is everything except for the mustangs  ;) I already found those mountings on the NPD but they are... $55 each  :o

I think we have a interpretation issue. He asked specifically about how the the bumper attaches. The bumper is rubber.
Since this post was tagged onto front rubber bumper, which is attached using a stud and nut, that he was asking about the how the rear rubber bumper attaches.
We all know it has to attach it to a mount -- but the question was about the bumper attachment.
Just call me Mr. Literal.

Anyway, these things would take at least an hour, if not more, to remove from an existing car. And I hate getting hot drill shavings in my face, so the price goes up. Considering how much in labor dollars and hot shavings it is to remove them I wouldn't get less than $100 for the pair.

Here are new ones for $100/pair:

Back to the original topic after the rabbit trail to the rear bumpers.

I pulled this one off of a 1970 Cyclone the other day.  What is strange is the C9OA-3A012-A embossed part number.

It is the exact time and shape as the C6OA-3025-A.

Any thoughts?  Has anyone seen this on any unrestored 69/70 Mustangs or Cougars?
