I'm looking for exterior mirrors for my 65 convertible. I need a pair that has the holes for the base at 4-3/4" overall base is 5-1/2
So far everything I've found were shorter
Tom
I have attached catalog cuts from the 1965 Ford Accessory Catalog, and the 1965 Spring Supplement showing available exterior mirrors available for 1965. Note that only three are actually designated for Mustangs.
The Racing mirror (C5RZ-17696-A) we can "throw out immediately as its base is much shorter than the 5-1/2" you desire.
Next is the C5ZZ-17696-A LH Remote and matching RH non-Remote (C5ZZ-17696-B) mirrors. These are commonly seen on 1965 and 1966 Mustangs. The Remote was available as a Factory Option, being part of the "Visibility Group" Option. The RH was available only as a Dealer Accessory. I would think that you have already looked at this one. It's base is slightly shorter than the 5-1/2" you desire (it actually measures 5-7/16"), but would cover the 4-3/4" spaced holes you noted. I really doubt that you'll be able to find an appropriate mirror with 4-3/4" mounting holes.
Finally shown for Mustang application is the B5AZ-17696-A mirror. It has a base of 7-1/2" long and mounting holes spaced 5-1/2" apart. Again, this would easily cover up holes spaced at 4-3/4". This mirror was only noted for Mustang application in 1965, although it was available until 1977. A word of caution should you select this mirror ; the early versions of this mirror (as well as its predecessor (B5A-18402-A), had a convex removable head that was attached by a threaded "cap". Note that the mirror head shown in the 1965 Accessory Catalog has a
conical head. It is attached to the base by means of a post on the back of the mirror head which goes into a hole in the top of the base and is retained by a set screw. I mention this so that if you do go looking for this mirror, you get the "period correct" one.
Hope this helps.
