64-1/2 Carpet
« on: June 20, 2018, 11:08:17 AM »
Read through some past strings on this topic.  I want to stay with the 64-1/2 carpet type, vs using a 65 carpet.  Do The 64-1/2 carpets advertised through the suppliers, have some sort of sewn edge to prevent unraveling by the door sills?  On the 65 and later types, it trucks under the sill plate, protecting it.
Thanks.
Phil

What body style? On coupes (and some of the early fastbacks) the carpet stops at the floor board and does not go under the rocker panel. Vinyl covers that area. I attached a pic of the 64.5 carpet I got from NPD couple of years ago.

Chris, it’s a coupe, and as a 64-1/2, also has the vinyl on the vertical part of the sill.  Is the edge of your carpet bound some how on the sill edge?

Perfect!  I just got off the phone with Kevin at Mustangs Unlimited that confirmed the bound edge.  He had said something to me earlier that made me question that fact.
Thanks!

It's commonly referred to as a 'serge' edge.

The carpet was typically under the front kick panels, even with the serge edge.

ChrisV289, in regards to your sill vinyl, did you have a set to use as a pattern? I have the originals, but they are not that straight.  I have they laid out and taped to cardboard to cut a pattern out of cardboard, but not sure if they shrunk.  Any advice?

One of the members on here sent me a template made out of paper taped together as the carpet in my car was replaced by the time we got it in 1992.  If you have the originals I would go off of that.  You can always make it a little bigger and cut off what you dont need.

I figured the originals with a plus factor was a good idea.  Just waiting for material.  Were yours originally glued in?

I assume they were as there was remnants of glue on the rocker panel and the carpet in there was not

Thanks.  I took this car apart 9 years ago and finally it is beginning to come together.  I took tons of photos, but good to see someone else’s project and methods.  Waiting for material, but paint work is the next big job.  Farming that out.  I’ll stick to the mechanicals.

Red standard interior (black car). Bought it from Mustangs Unlimited.
