Parking brake handle

  Hi guys. I ordered a new parking brake handle for a '66 i'm working on, but can't figure out how to get the old one off. It's just the plastic end that says ' BRAKE'.  I see a pin, but no way to drive it out. Is there a trick to this?

After the handle is out of the car, use brute force, a cold chisel, a medium size hammer, a bench vice and finally a 1/16 inch drift pin.

  Not sure what you are saying. Just break the old handle off in pieces? Seems kind of medieval.

Drive the pin inwards and then pull the remnants of the handle off.  Install the new handle, new roll pin (or re-use the old one if you can find it), and you're good to go.

Depending on how well the pin is in there it's often easier to do this with the p/b assembly, including cable, out of the car.

That way you have a way of supporting the rod in a bench vise to drive out the pin. I often use the bench vise as a cradle -- not clamping the item in, but cradling it between the jaws.

It might be best to have a piece of soft wood under the rod near the pin when you drive in the pin.

Just did mine not long ago. As mentioned its best to take the whole unit out of the car and put it on a vice to drive that pin out. Mine didn't take much force.

  The assembly was already out of the car, and yes, it was much easier. Did as suggested and drove the old pin in and it worked like a charm!

For reference, what company? The "supplier" (who you bought it from), or the "actual manufacturer"?

Had the same concern with mine. Haven’t had a issue in the last couple years. Believe mine came from NPD. Was figuring if the new one broke I’d just restore my original however it’s held up well.

  Tossed the box away, but the supplier was Larry's. It seems that everything I have gotten from them is lower end, hobby quality junk.
