Paint Stamp, 64-1/2, Dearborn
« on: May 31, 2018, 05:15:25 AM »
Has anyone duplicated the paint stamp placed on various panels (headlamp doors, etc) I found on my 64-1/2? See photo.

Off the top of my head there were maybe four different ones used typically  on each car at this plant and during this time period. Some were "full size" like you show but with different headings and of course inspectors and the smaller sized ones for other tests and checks  But I at least have remade the later versions in the past

Jeff, are they just “regular” hand stamps with stencil type ink? Are you aware of anyone that makes them? Not trying to reinvent the wheel if I don’t have to.
Thanks.

Hand stamps carried around by each inspector. We've been able to meet some of these over the years (different plants)

Would be curious to know where that stamp in his OP Posting pic was found (What area of the car). It looks like the back of a Headlight assembly, but I could be wrong.

I've never seen those "Baseball Diamond" stamps used on anything but Dearborn made cars thru 1966 for the most part. But there are a few "RARE" examples (2 or 3) of some Early 1967 Dearborn cars that got them as well.  They are definitely more prevalent on '64.5-'65 Dearborn made cars and used Sporadically on 1966 Dearborn made cars.  Other plants such as Metuchen and San Jose used completely different ink stamps.

If you check other threads (here and elsewhere where you are a member) we've discussed the use of one particular stamp up into 69 at Dearborn. It appears (based on the inspector number) that one worker who had been an inspector in during early 65 production filled in from time to time and rather than use the supplied stickers he chose to break out his old trusty original stamp and use it instead on those rare occasions when he worked that position

Other style and design stamps started being use in 69 at Dearborn for multiple purposes have been documented

As the original post said, it is a 64.5 coupe built at Dearborn.  The stamp was found on the back of both headlamp doors.

Interesting Jeff.  I do remember you mentioning this a long time ago now, but I sure did not remember that before... That is a very interesting factoid, and I would love to see some post '67 examples if they do exist.., Whatever the case, I'm sure that it was few and far between, and certainly was not the "Norm".

Great little fact though nonetheless....

Looks good!  The hardest part was finding a yellow ink stamp.
