67 K and GT390 rear valance w/cutouts
« on: May 28, 2018, 10:52:16 PM »
A recent post on the SAAC forum got me thinking.
When did the various plants first receive the K and GT390 dual exhaust valance with factory cutouts?
It's my understanding that the valance had to be created months after the start of the model year.
But when?

Ford didn't originally create a 'cutout' valance. Who knows why.

Do you have some documentation of that? I have not seen a early car with out the cut out valance.

EARLY Shelby's were modified regular valances, I think he it speaking to the Shelby crowd on this detail.

+1 . Early 67 Shelby's to be specific. After several months of 67 production Ford came out with the duel exhaust rear valance.

I know that I'm drilled into 67 Shelbys, but this time, no. I posted this in the 67-68 Mustang category. You guys seem to know me too well  -- and I stated it badly.

As the title states, I'm looking for information on when Mustang (GT) K codes -- not Shelbys --  and 390 GT Mustangs got the Ford produced GT (cutout) rear valance.

With Jeff's help it would be interesting to see pics and VINS of the earliest Mustangs to receive the stock cutouts.

On page 14 in the sales broacher it shows the cut outs in the GT section. The rev. on this one is 1-67 so a earlier rev may show something else. Interesting topic, so what was done before the cut outs were added? Just hang below the valance?

A notch was manually cut out of the rear valance . Two different types of trim were used to cover the rough edge of the hand made into valance notch of the early 67 Shelby.

I believe ruppstang wanted to know what Ford did on K and S code Mustangs prior to the stamped cutout being made available. I think they only did turn downs, but that is based on conjecture, not fact.

The circumstantial evidence in the engineering drawings of the assemblyline manual page 37 indicate turn downs is most likely . FYI the 65/66 non GT duel exhaust had turn downs so most likely early 67 duel exhaust handled the same way until the revision.

My ‘67 390 GTA Convertible came with the rear valance cutouts.
The build date of the car is 9/22/1966 in San Jose.

(The attached photo was taken shortly after I purchased the car in 1983. Obviously, the dual exhaust system had been replaced at some point prior to that)

Not sure where you got that the introduction was delayed

Plenty of original early 67 GT's with the exhaust and cut outs

He most likely got the idea because hundreds of duel exhaust 67 Shelby's had to have the exhaust tip cut outs hand cut because they were missing on those duel exhaust cars rear valance.  It wasn't until after several months into Shelby production that the 67 Shelby's had the rear valance with the stamped exhaust cut out start to show up.

Given the rarity of Mustang K-codes and GT 390 S-codes cars I kind of tripped due to what Bob says.
I have never seen a Mustang K-code and due to my interest in small blocks I've never considered S-code cars. Plus, both are very rare.
There is also the fact that both the K and S had to be GTs for the cutout and the lesser GTs never got dual exhaust or cutouts.
Then Shelby decided to create his own cutout.

I leapt to the conclusion (mostly due to the Shelby thing) that perhaps there wasn't a cutout until later due to supply or engineering issues.

My apologies for the misleading thread.
