Topic: 64 1/2 - 73 -- Starter Motor Plunger Cover (Group 11060)

The latest starter motor thread had me dig out a few starters I had laying around in order to verify stamped in dates (or no stampings) and nose casting dates.
But then I noticed not one of the 'starter motor plunger covers' (hereafter called 'covers') were the same.

I've taken two pics of each cover still installed on the starters. Hopefully, with your input, we can classify and discover the years or vendors that made each cover.

1a) Scallops on the left. Right edge of cover slants back to the left.	1b) The spine down the middle has a sharp bend in it, but it ends quickly. The end of the cover is a bit bulbous.

2a) Instead of one scallop, there are two. Right edge of cover is more vertical and rounder	2b) The spine is similar, but the scallops go much further towards the end. The end of the cover is quite bulbous.

3a) There are no scallops -- just one continuous spine. Right edge of cover is completely vertical.	3b) The spine goes completely down the back.

4a) Very similar to #3a, but the edge on the right is now canted to left.	4b) This view is almost identical to 3b.

I might change a pic or two as my cellphone camera is getting foggy due to all the chemicals in the shop and on my fingers!

Looks much like 3a/3b, yes.

The "ink-stamp type, C7AF-11001-B" starter I have restored was purchased online as "used", so no other history except that it looked "old" when it arrived, though it worked OK on a bench test however it was in need of overhaul once I inspected the brushes (meaning it very well could have been in "much used, original condition").

No 100% way of knowing the "cover" is what would be typical on a November, '66 built SJ example.

This detail might be rather difficult to determine for starters that are already installed, excepting a form of Braille I suppose. I am a little surprised there are not more comments over this detail so far, perhaps other members are doing research?

Well the thread was started only 15 hours ago or or so. Guess that's the internet for you

Add to that that most of the starters many of us have are likely not original so adding them to a survey will only muddy the waters.

I for one had another 2 dozen requests I haven't gotten to yet from yesterday so my offering will be delayed

According to the 68 MPC, the C7AF-11001-C is identified as "110,2K".  Applications are 1967 390/427 for all car lines (A/B/F/S) and for 1968 (1) A/B/F 390; A/B (S/T) 427; B/F 200

Since the nose-cone is a 2-bolt, we can assume this starter was rebuilt since big blocks all used a 3-bolt nose-cone. That also removes it from a research prospect.

You probably have a C3 nose-cone on that, can you look?

A 2nd look at the picture and I notice no gasket on the cover (and none on the band-strap). I wonder if this may have been rebuilt and/or cleaned up along it's "survivor" lifetime.

...or, are some of these details different during different periods of time. (While we are discussing starter motor details, the gasket on at least the cover or lack of a gasket on the cover should fit into this discussion)
