66 red interior paint
« on: May 13, 2018, 10:37:22 AM »
Is there a preferred source for the 66 red interior paint? I generally use Virginia Classic Mustang and they have rattle cans by Rainbow Industries, but I have no idea if the color would be correct. I recall getting a rattle can from somewhere in the past that was an odd pink color so I'm pretty hesitant to believe claims of "correct color".

I know the 66 red can be a challenge as the vinyl, dash pads and paint can be different. So if there's a source or a paint code that's dead on I want to find it before I paint up the entire interior. Thanks guys!

Done maybe 2-3 of them, the stuff that NPD sells should be close.  Could try a paint store and see if they can mix up something to spray out of a gun.

Thanks Charles. I'm thinking I may stay with the lacquer spray cans. My local auto body supply place carries PPG, but I'm sure if I pursued getting lacquer from them it might be an ordeal and I'd be worried how the gloss level of a urethane single stage might be.

I've had good luck using PPG concept in the interiors, just flatten it to eggshell finish.  More work, but much more durable than lacquer.

Is there any truth to the how to restore your mustang book that says on a 66 the dash panel and steering column are painted a different color then the speaker grill, window posts, door metal surface and rear interior quarter panels?

Yup. Actually it's red and burgundy. It's a nice combination.

The speaker grille and dash/windshield moldings would be burgundy to match the dash pad.  Otherwise, the rest of the interior should be the '66 red interior color.

Attached pics should help, these are of an Unrestored low mileage '66.

Rainbow Industries out of California went out of business about 3 years ago.  I know that because I tried contacting them quite a few times.  The only company I know that makes interior paint now is OMNI-PAK carried by NPD.  Some vendors may have some "old stock" of the cans...But the company is Gonzo...

It stinks too because Rainbow Industries made Exterior Paint as well which as far as I know Omni-Pak does not make..

Scott Drake supplies some vendors with his "AccuMatch Interior Paints."  Part number (most likely universal) is L-5773. I thought it matched up really well when I used it. Check with Virginia.
