1968 390 Starter Cable Clamps
« on: May 09, 2018, 08:15:51 PM »
Sorry if this has been explained but I’m not clear on the routing of the starter cable routing.  Assembly manual appears to show one clamp located on the engine.  Photos I’ve seen have several different positions on the top or bottom of the motor mounts.  My thoughts are that two clamps on either side of the motor mount as in the attached picture is probably right but can’t find anything official on that installation.  Car is a 1968 San Jose S-Code with a build date of Feb 23rd.  Appreciate any insights...thanks!

That's it except only one of the silver clamps is used the one closest to the front of the car.

What's the Ford part number stamped on the cable? If it's C6DF-14431-A then only one clamp is used.

Cable I have is C8ZF-14431-B.  Is that the wrong cable for a 68?

The assembly manual calls out C8ZF-14431-A but I couldn’t find a -A when I was trying to run down all of the parts.  Intent is for a concourse driven car so I’m trying to get it as close as possible.

I don’t have one to check where I am at however remember the part number (book calls out for)typically differs from the engineering number. The engineering number is what is marked on the part.

Thanks Bob...let me know.

My repro clamps are a little off.  I have the ones on the front of the mount in the photo.  I can order another one from Bill Upham as his repro has the right bend as depicted on the rear clamp in the photo.  I can get another cable while I'm at it if I've got the wrong one.

Cable I have is C8ZF-14431-B.  Is that the wrong cable for a 68?
That cable is shown for 390, 428 and 428CJ with smog and with one clamp (68 Electric, AM0023 pg42).

Out of curiosity, where did you look?
The 75 MPC shows a generic 36 inch long replacement without details, D1PZ-14431-D, which is no help.
A slightly different situation happened to me for the 66 289 application. Both my Oct 65 builds used 65 cables, two clamps, although one clamp was indicated. The explanation was to use up old inventory. Therein lies the problem, what is specified vs. what you found. The latter usually required documentation.

This is for a 390.  I've been Google searching the -A part and trying the sites I know that deal in original or very good reproduction parts (i.e. manfieldmustang, allclassicmustang, WCCC, etc.).  I'm sure I don't know all the good sources for this stuff as this is my first attempt at a concourse driven restoration.

I took a look at this again last night but my assembly manual lists C8ZF-14431-A on page 42.

That part number is the assembly line part number used at least thru 3-29-68.
The 75 MPC shows a generic 36 inch long replacement without details, D1PZ-14431-D, -
That part number is the service part number replacing C8ZF-14431-A.
Occasionally the MPC (an abbreviation for the service manual) indicates the original assembly line number. In this case it does not. You are limited to C8ZF-14431-A.
