1970 California Emissions gas tank restoration
« on: March 31, 2018, 10:52:16 AM »
Looking for a shop to restore a California emissions gas tank on my 1970 Mustang.  I plan using the original smog system on this car.
Thanks

Thanks Jeff.  I should be more specific.  I’m not looking for a restoration but only want to clean the interior of the tank to remove any rust and varnish build up.

Radiator shop that still has a dipping/soaking tank? We use to use engine shops with tanks but everyone has moved away from those over the years to the cabinet style cleaners that I know of but a possibility if a shop still had one

I would try something like the rust 911 product   https://www.rust911.com/rust911-concentrated-16x-rust-remover-free-shipping/  . Seal the tank with a dummy sender etc. and fill the tank slosh around then let the product work and dump and flush .  I would follow with one of the internal gas tank sealer products . I did it some years ago and the rust remover I used was much more expensive.

If I remember correctly the CA emissions tank has some plastic pieces inside so some care should be taken to not break them off inside.

as Craig says -yes theirs plastic piece inside the tank.

If your not going to use the 70 EVAP system, but want to make it like it's all there, as I took old tank fitting and have a local radiator shop weld al the pieces on and it now looks like an original set up for 1970

I dont think you can restore a 70 gas tank because of the internals that are there.  I am working on a guide to show what pieces were added for the 70 CA emissions system and will cut open one of the original extra tanks I have here as part of that.  Will help explain why you cant do that with these tanks.

Marcus, please be sure to point out the differences between the '70 Mustang vs '70 Cougar evaporative emissions components.

Ok...I will add it to the to do list and try to get this one done this summer.  Originally was just trying to show the differences between Mustang and Cougar fuel filler necks...and then other related parts.  Will find a way to make it interesting and informative.

A few pics of the internals of my CA tank from a few years ago when I openned mine up for inspection and float replacement.
I also found that the vent tube had come loose and was rolling around in the bottom of the tank >.<  I made a crude attempt at epoxying it back into place, but it didn't hold up long-term.  I think the main purpose of the metal tube is to give the vapors from the filler neck a place to go ~ more toward the center of the tank where they can be vented through the plastic lines of the vapor recovery system.

I hope this is useful / interesting info.

Cool pictures Mike.  I will get some more when I cut one of the extra tanks apart so we can have a full view of what the insides looked like.
