1964-1/2 260 Exhaust System Resonator?
« on: March 26, 2018, 03:40:47 PM »
I have seen diagrams of 260 engine exhaust with and without resonator.  Which is correct?

Where did you see these variations? The 64 1/2 - 65 Mustang Chassis Assembly Manual shows a resonator, 5212, and a transverse muffler, 5230. So does the 75 MPC for service.

Jim, any suggestions for a source for a replacement system with resonator?
Thanks. Phil

That might explain why I have seen it both ways.

That would be a 65 model Mustang. A resonator is shown as being used on 64 1/2 Mustangs in the Chassis Assembly Manual. No engine or dates are given. The 75 MPC also, by implication, show a 260 being replaced with a resonator. This may be "universal" replacement.

Either National Parts Depot or Virginia Classic Mustang would be good sources. They both have members on this forum.

64.5-65 single exhaust Mustangs did not come from the factory equipped with a resonator until mid November 64.

Being that 65 production began in August 1964 (the 17th is supposed to be the day), a November 65 date would be well past any 64 1/2 designated Mustangs, so there would be no resonators used in any 260 or 289 "D" code cars. Just checking.

I'm guessing Mike meant Nov '64.

The later parts books would have superseded part numbers for early exhaust systems.  The single exhaust resonator systems were probably considered 'an improvement', so the old numbers/config were dropped.

Your date would mean that NO 64 1/2 Mustangs with a 260 or 289 "D" code had a resonator.
Come on guys. No more speculation. FACTS.

That's exactly right, no resonators used on any single exhaust systems until Nov '64, which includes 64.5 D, F and U codes.

Mike's 4,500 mile Unrestored August '64 car with original exhaust, no resonator.  I believe he had found some other examples over the years.

Looking at the '65 single year MPC, there's a symbol designation for 'Includes Resonator'.  In the extension pipe chart section, the only C5ZZ number with the symbol is dual exhaust.

The '65 parts book and '66 one show different numbers for V8 single exhaust.

Before 4/6/64 - C5ZZ-5A212-A
From 4/6/64-6/5/64 - C5ZZ-5A212-C
From 6/5/64 - C5ZZ-5A212-F

Inlet pipe (C5ZZ-5246-B) and muffler(C5ZZ-5230-B) are all the same for those 3 extension pipe applications.

'66:
C5ZZ-5A212-G  (this is what is listed in the '75 MPC)
C6ZZ-5A212-A
