67 SJ Small Block Motor Mount and Fasteners
« on: March 22, 2018, 12:57:07 PM »
While cleaning various fasteners I came upon the motor mount bolts.

I was using the included pic from the Chassis Assembly manual for reference.

The 4 frame to mount bolts (375117-S2) I found were indeed PO and the nuts (377706-S7) were Cadmium.

The 2 larger adapter to insulator through bolts (379699-S2) were also PO as was the washer (376102-S2). The 7/16 nut (376420-S7) however is listed as Cadmium, whereas mine was PO.

The hardware fastener Excel agrees with Cad for the large nut, but this is a SJ car.

What was assembly line?

[edit update pic and change title to "...Mount and Fasteners"

I would suggest going with the S7 on that nut . First off S7 is how I have always seen them in that location. Second you would be hard pressed to find very many nuts that style PO.

Ok. S7 it is.
Although finding a PO nut is easy -- I have the original 7/16-14 w/built in washer in the tumbler right now that I will PO later! And not use ...

And here at the beginning of all of this I told my wife "Aw, these Mustangs are easy-peasy. Everything you need to know about paint marks and finishes is already known and/or re-popped. Almost a cookbook car."

That scenario hasn't worked out AT ALL!

Thanks again for the help.

Ok. S7 it is.
You are going to find that there are few shops that will do cad plating, and those that do have a high lot charge. To "replicate" cad, I bead blast with glass beads then have the part plated dull zinc (a relatively recent process).

Actually, the majority of hardware items specified by Mustang related engineering have been followed by the three plants. It's the 10 percent that are always the problem.

Eastwood sells a small zinc self plating set up that is relatively in expensive. It is great for those small pesky parts that you forget or are afraid to send to your minimum order Plater.

I'm setting up an an eBay order for the zinc strips and will give it a try on some other spare fasteners.

Somehow, going thru life "zinc plated" does not appeal to me. I prefer JD No. 7 for sniffles.

I guess my frame mounts were buried in another location, so this comes much after the previous posts.
I also changed the title to include the mount and not just just talk about fasteners.

On the actual metal frame mounts 6028/6029 I'm surmising that are bare steel, as indicated in the 390 mount plate thread.

Media blast my painted mounts, tumble, add the weld bluing and PO?

Never mind.
I just found THE post when dealing with motor mounts:

I had kept my search to 67/68, not all.

Yes the chassis side mounts are bare steel as you guessed. FYI in 67 the big block and small block chassis mounts are the same.

I just unbolted my insulators from the block.
Cool -- They are both C7s in good shape.

Since the PO only knew one color and painted every-dam-thing semi-gloss black, is that the right finish for the bare metal showing on the insulator?

Typically bare metal on the ear/eyelet portion that the bolt goes through on the rubber motor mount.

NOS/service replacements can be found painted black as well as ones that have been "restored" in the past. Here is a picture of an early service part that was not painted and illustrates what Bob described. Unfortunately the bare steel has rusted a bit and we see the reason why Ford choose to paint them black at some point to protect the look while waiting to be sold
