Metuchen Export Car info.
« on: March 21, 2018, 02:38:47 PM »
Hello,
My car is marked EXPORT from Metuchen.  May of 1968.  Does anyone have any information what exactly does this mean?  My guess is it was intended to be shipped but is there some evidence that some simply did not go?  Just curious if more info. on this is available.
Thanks

Marked where? Do you have a Marti report? http://www.martiauto.com/

As Jim mentioned a Marti report may provide some clues. In general export cars could have been sold to to military members through the PX or ones sent to dealers in specific regions or countries.

A few places to look for clues.

1- Your buck tag. These often include the country where the car was suppose to be going to

2- Country ID plates. In many countries they attached their own VIN plates after cars passed inspections, certification or modifications needed for that particular country

3- Owners manual or other factory paper work.  Owners manuals were available in a number of different languages and are often filled out with the original owners name or other information that may provide a clue.

4- Check out the interior (under seats, carpet, ......) for clues. Match books, receipts and so on may provide something to go on

5- Since you didn't mention that the car carried any T5 emblems were can likely eliminate that possibility.  These were a fairly small number of cars sold to Germany because of a naming issue with the MUSTANG

That's a start - good luck

The only clue I have is the door tag says DSO 92.  Buck tag missing, only the screw is left with 1% of tag.
I ordered my Marti report today so now the waiting game.

Car came with no carpet so no manuals.

Word of mouth is the car was driven to my location (midwest) pulling a trailer from Florida.  So it at some point went from NJ to FL(guess).  Military car would be cool.

The transmission tag first tricked me for I thought it was an executive car but later found far far to the right another number making what I believe is PEE C1 making it just a plain C4 tranny for 68.   Below it I'm not sure what the rest means  289 (just happens to be the motor but don't make sense on a tranny)  6M1 (no clue)  B4 (feb. 4th guess build date guess)
Thanks for more info.

Manuals would be in the glove box. You might be thinking of the build sheet. For your year and plant you more likely to find it behind the gauge cluster around the dash wire loom

What speedometer does the car have? Will not tell us the country but may indicate other things.

Guess no window stickers or ones applied to the bumpers?

I think the Marti report is a good idea for you. You should go for the deluxe report with rush service.

Export could mean Canada as well. The NJ plant supplied cars to most of the districts east of the MIssissippi river.

Many of the 1968  NJ built cars have  a build sheet taped to the main wiring harness, behind the main dash panel.

Does your Mustang have "T5" badging on the fenders (or holes)? Gas cap or steering wheel missing the word "MUSTANG"? If so, it was sold in Germany or to a US serviceman there or on his way home.

I will look  most of the car is in boxes.  Someone started the restoration and gave up.    Steering wheel is in rough shape but I'll look.  I have some emblems in a bag but I think it is just the letters that spell Mustang that goes on the trunk.  I am going over at noon today to check for build sheets under the dash which has been torn out so I  really doubt they are still there but this is exciting to me to hopefully find.
The mustang expert that came over briefly got all excited seeing the drips underneath the car on the floor pan.  He said it is not too often you see the drips from the actual factory still underneath.   Not really exciting to me but hey they do look like Stalactites which are cool.

Nope no build sheet and no T5 badging.  Noticed I have wrong Gas cap after researching that.  Hope Marti gives me a clue on what was suppose to be on it.

What is a good book so I don't keep asking questions on specifically 68 coupe.   Every time I turn I find new questions.

He won't be able to help with emblems and things like gas cap but we will once you find out more.

You might have missed it but did you look at the speedometer?

Often export cars do not offer up a bunch of clues and sometimes owners don't even realize they own on.

Here is a picture of a car I ran across at a local car show. Original paint marks caught my eye originally under the hood. Turns out it was an export to Japan originally

Another example. From the rear the only thing that sort of stands out is the additional lights and reflects often things we see required for some other countries. In thise example an export to Belgium

So that no one get confused this is the T5 emblem used on 67 and up (seen them as late as Mustang II's) original Germany exports Mustangs

And an example of a kilo speedo. For this year tops out at 200. The one in my 71 Cougar (added) tops at 220 or 240 :)

And that makes a FIRST 68 I have seen with a 6K tach. We were discussing that in another thread about a month or two ago, thought maybe if it were true, they were early builds. In this case, we probably have to throw it out of the sample pool because being paired with a Kilo Speedo (Export), may be another "exception".
