The change was indicated by a change in the interior coding. Been a while since I did a survey and think I would want to double check the dates were had established against all the new data to see if anything could be gained

Using Marti reports (since they include real build dates) as a basis for this survey and using just the interior code as the sole indicator-  I came up with the following

Interior codes (for example) 3A to 3AA

Dearborn - between Dec 17th and 20th

San Jose - between Jan 8th and Feb 12

It appears that the use of the three digit coding was discontinued after approx. May 69 though this did not apparently mean that Ford went back to the earlier light wood grain pattern.  Just one of those odd details uncovered in the survey.

Must report that actual cars observations do not always appear to match the code. This may suggest that the interior were swapped at some point or something else happened.  One possibility is at the time of the change some cars received the wrong woodgrain for the interior coding or if there was a grouping of documented examples it was a supply issue.

Thanks again Jeff!  Once again great information!  Is it true no one reproduces the light wood grain interior pieces?

I have an NOS light teak radio face plate that I have had for 40 or so years. I know about the 3A and 3AA interior codes but never knew the changover time frame. I only knew it was before April.

Daven, just ran across your thread about teak wood grain dash inserts. If you still are looking for a supplier, I had mine done over last year by a guy who has since passed away, but Frank from Vacuum Orna-metal was supposed to be picking up the decal work from Chris. Frank did all my plastic chroming on all the dash, instrument, a/c balls, and also handled the plastic repairs needed. He did an outstanding job. Chris had a 3M product that was a perfect match. I put Chris in touch with Frank and I think that's how Frank got the product info. After Chris passed, Frank told me he was going to offer the decals along with his other services. Hope that helps. Orna-metal's ph # is :800-827-6762------ Good Luck !!

I wanted to provide some info to help narrow that 'sometime after May' window.  My San Jose scj mach 1 (9R02R1777XX) was built on May 22, 69 and had the 3AA Trim code...and obviously the walnut wood.

Thanks for bringing the subject back up to the front so we can provide a little more information after some focus on the subject

++++++++++++++++++++
- Looking at San Jose built cars Here are some of the examples I have. Listed by real build date first

Jan 8th 69 - 9R02R1315xx (interior code 3A)

Feb 12th 69 - 9R02M1433xx (interior code 3WA)

Feb 21st 69 - 9R02R1479xx (interior code 3DA)

March 24th 69 - 9R02S1560xx (interior code 3AA)

March 25th 69 - 9R02R1583xx (interior code 3AA)

Apr 7th 69 - 9R02R1532xx (interior code 3W)

++++++++++++++++++++++
Change over date or period seems to be a bit more irregular at this plant.
Looking at NJ built carsHere are some of the examples I have. Listed by real build date first

Feb 24st 69 - 9T02R1922xx (interior code 3D)
Feb 24st 69 - 9T02R1727xx (interior code 3DA)
April 22nd 69 - 9T02Q2058xx (interior code 3A)

Note: Don't have a ton of NJ examples and 9T02R1727xx is the only one I have with the three digit interior code. Could it be a typo on the Marti?  Don't know but the example appears to be out of what the others would suggest the pattern is currently form only my stuff

From buildsheets

9T01S186xx with a 07B scheduled build date has a three digit interior code

9T02H1754xx with a 18B scheduled build date has a two digit (3A) interior code

9T02R2817xx with a 23D scheduled build date has a three digit interior code

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dearborn cars - Appears that we may be able narrow this change over period to a specific week so far but looking at other plants it may be too early to assume this is a hard change over.

Dec 13th 68 - 9F02M4800xx  (interior code 3W)

Dec 20th 68 - 9F02R1430xx (interior code 3AA)

So I need some clarification on this. My SJ Feb 5th scheduled build date car was actually built on Feb 14th and has a 3WA interior code. Should it have the Teak or the Walnut? I couldn?t find anything that said what the 3WA denotes.

Will look at what I have and report back. If you still need that look after reading the response below.

3WA is just a deviation code of 3W code. Common thought is that it relates to the wood grain difference your asking about. So the 3WA is the white interior with the walnut appointments (dash and doors - as well as console if ordered)
