1965 1966 Traction master under-axle traction bars
« on: January 16, 2018, 03:13:02 PM »
I have just picked up a set of these traction bars, ( no doubt reproductions), however they are missing the front mounting brackets because the previous owner had his bodyshop replace the front section of frame rail and they were trashed. Does anyone know where one could get some "blue prints" of the front mounting brackets so I could hopefully reproduce them?? Or even measurements / dimensions would be a start.

Just to be clear, these are the "under-rider" traction bars not the type that mounted on top of the axle.  Thanks!!

You might start with contacting Traction Master and see if they can give you info or sell you the part . Most likely they can do ether. FYI SA added a heavy piece of angle iron to the frame rail first before adding the bracket that came with the traction master kit.

Thanks for the info Bob. I was thinking of trying them for replacements. And it’s good to know about the added angle pieces. That I was unaware of.  Anyone have any pics or closeups of this area??

My friend Dave McDonald made these pictures for my friend in Sweden (6S923).
Hope he doesn't mind me sharing them.

Wow that is really helpful. I'm half tempted to recreate these myself since these pics are very detailed. I have a good bit of angle iron and steel laying around the shop. I'll follow up and let you all know if they can even be purchased separately from traction master, or if I decide to create these from scratch. Many thanks!

Roland's 6S923 was raced by Claude Dubois in Europe and the original traction bars
were removed and the ear on the front mountings were cut off with the rest
remaining and the rear brackets with 3 ears were removed. A Panhard Rod was added.
Roland made the ears and welded them onto the front brackets
and it turned out great. No one can see any difference from original.

No problem at all Bo, thanks for sharing! I totally forgot about those, better save a copy in case I didn't save the originals...

Scott Drake reproduces a concours underride traction bar kit. I haven't seen one so can't comment on how accurate they are or if you can get the front brackets separately. Available here from Virginia Mustang...

The Drake made set is the next best thing. The hardware is different and it doesn't include the Shelby added angle piece for strength (as seen in your example)

Thanks for posting the link, Dave.

Unfortunately, we are currently out of the kits due to Drake having trouble obtaining all of the components.

I have also tried to get the various components separately, but they are only sold as a kit at this time.

We only have the bushings available separately.

I picked up the Drake bars from VA Mustang last year after first trying the TM bars. I had the correct rear mounts which TM doesn’t provide but it turned out that the front mount on TM was less than I expected so I swapped for Drake which uses a piece of angle iron. The dimensions are nearly identical to those pictured. The only notable difference is that the rear side of the piece with the bolt welded to it is flush with the angle iron. The 10-70 brackets are also very close to original TM pieces

I have emailed Traction master twice and had no response. I'm going to attempt to make a "looks close" pair of these mounts myself and have bought some angle iron today. Might take me a bit and might not be exact but I'll post pictures when I'm done.. Thanks to everyone for their replies. I have learned a bunch on just one small detail!!!
