What should the correct part number be for the 289 decal with white and black checkered sides around Oct of 64? Repros out there show C5OF and very few C5ZF. I know Z is for mustang but want to be sure they weren't using any left over decals with the other part number.

Which engine? My "A" code GT reproduction decal has a part number of "C5ZF-9638C" (no second dash). It states "4V Premium Fuel". The "C" code has the white and black checkered sides as well with out the 4V notation. Both engines were available in Oct 64.

The 65-66 C code CID decal normally would not have white/black checkered pattern, but only orange/black and just have '289 CUBIC INCHES'.  This decal carries a C5ZF engineering number.

The A code CID decal was orange with black/white checkered patterns in the top corners and '4V /Premium Fuel' markings.  This one also carries a C5ZF engineering number, but ends in 'D'.

Mike Murray's August '64 Dearborn A code coupe has the C code style decal.  Maybe the premium fuel decals were not put into use yet then?

What is the difference between a decal that ends in C and one that ends in D? One currently on the car ends in a C. And the one I just ordered ends in a D both look the same from the pics but once it arrives I will see close up

What is the reasoning for both C-Code decals being re produced? With white checkered ends and orange? I was told back when I obtained my white checkered decal that that was the correct one for my 66 C-Code. Some agree and some do not. Ive also heard of both styles being found on un restored cars.

I spot checked several unrestored 65-66 car pics and all were orange/black for C codes.

The all orange decal is for 68 289 "C" code engines. The reason is lost in history, although that color scheme seems to have been applied to the 302 as well.

You would have to ask the companies that choose to make them. In some cases they might just make them since they always have.  Some companies have made and sold reproduction decals that never were original to the cars they list them for sale for. When asked they told me long ago. We make them because people buy them. To which I responded - they buy them because you make them and list them for that application - sort of a chicken or egg argument

One of the challenge when looking at unrestored cars I've found it that this C Inch decal is the first and often only decal that gets replaced other than serviceable parts that wear out for some reason so you've got to get a good look or often its a reproduction

Ford had a design/procurement policy that a drawing for a part included the source to buy it shown on that drawing. If a different vendor was used for the same part, that usually involved a different part number and different drawing. Ford did not let its suppliers know who each other were. It was a policy that worked and it did keep costs under control. This different part number scenario for the decal, a "C" and a "D" may fit into that type of policy. It also could be as simple as a different type of adhesive was used.

I've been bitten by that chicken a couple times.. ill be out in the garage peeling off my decal....  I've always been suspicious of my decal not being right from the day the guy sold me the thing at Carlisle a few years back. Thanks.

Chris - Just want to mention that I did look through my pictures but few if any were taken close enough to make out the part number.

Now the whole two color verses three color is a different thing but not what you were asking

The Mannel small block book goes into the decals briefly and shows the engineering numbers, but no explanation other than there was a difference between C and A codes.
