Searching for item on a 1965/65 floor console
« on: August 22, 2010, 07:02:27 AM »
Perhaps anybody can help me, by providing with that item for my 1966 original floor console.
Unfortunetaly the switch is broken, an half part is missing. No Mustang-shop I ask has that item to provide or even know about:

Thanx for ideas :)

Sally,

The part in question is made of copper. You may be able to cut a piece of copper flashing to the needed shape and solder it to the part you have. I currently have my console apart and provide you with pictures, dimensions, and tracings. Feel free to contact me off list.

You will need to find someone with a broken (plastic) console or someone that is cutting one down for a AC car

first say thanx ! to Peter Bush ... he send me pictures and a technical drawing of this item, so I am able to rebuild it ....

@ Jeff: I think here in germany you will not find so much original consoles, even not to cut them for "AC-Cars". Further what I see in the catalogs - the aftermarket consoles do not have that switch - is this possible ?

That is the Console light switch.  It is the only part of the '65/66 console that is currently not reproed. ....But, The tooling is in the works, Scott Drake will be coming out with it soon. It was originally Stapled to the back top of the console.

Last year, I was looking for one myself.  I bought a beat-on $80 console off of ebay, and stole it from that, then sold the rest of the parts..Try Fleabay..

I don't think I've ever seen anything stapled to the back of a console.  That type of switch/bulb holder went into the hole in the top of the console compartment and was held in place with tabs made into the bulb holder.

The earlier version of the 65/66 console used a light (similar to the shifter light) that attached to the console compartment back panel via clips made into the light.

Yes, It was the top of the console, in the rear, but not on the direct back, and yes, It was originally Stapled top the top of the Console glove box by Ford... I've had three '66 consoles, and the switch was stapled on all three. The staple kept the piece from "Popping" out from underneath as the console door was opened numerous times. It was the same identical staple used as the staples that were used for the Interior rear quarter trim inner "fuzzies".

I'll try and get some pics up here to show everyone both types of console lights, Early, and late.

Tony's correct.
You can even see the holes from the staple in Sally66's picture - opposite the missing tab. The crown of the staple is 1/2" (as evidenced by the holes in the bulb socket) and the legs are 3/8". Wire gauge is .047" or about 1/16".

Not all the contacts were stapled.  It is my belief based on the few samples I've pulled from consoles that they were not stapled until sometime after they were introduced.  The only stapled samples I have came from 66 consoles and the unstapled ones from 65 consoles.  The only conclusion I'll draw from that is that at some time Ford figured out these things were rattling and falling out and decided to start stapling them!
Scott Drake is not going to make them.  I have samples out for quotation but I cannot get beyond ridiculous tooling costs.  Have to look elsewhere for a manufacturer.

Here's a pic of the staple in my May 66 vert console. I circled it so you can see placement.

Here's just the copper piece. You can see staple holes.

I had an early 65 with a console that had a light like the one on the automatic gearshift that didn't have the copper switch.

If I remember correctly, The light only came on when you opened the car-doors or trned on the interior light at the light switch.

Thanx for the good pictures of the part and all the informations !

Is anybody willing to borrow me that part for a while ? ... So I am able to give that to a friend of mine to rebuild that.
Will be easier than only by the drawings ....

Of course you will get it bake, and the shipping to germany is not so expensive for such a small part.

If everything gets fine, perhaps there are two parts in the envelope when I send it back ;)

I'll have to dig my console out...I am adding A/C to my car and will obviously be cutting console down for A/C cap. I'll let you know.
