Power Windows Power Source
« on: November 03, 2017, 11:05:23 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I am trying to test each of the power window motors and need to know which wire is the power.  I have taken the window motors out of the car and I have a red wire and a yellow wire.  I'm trying to verify which motors are any good.  I believe the window switches are non functional and will need new ones or have the current ones re built.  Thanks Mark

The answer is both are power, and both are ground. Just not at the same time. ;) The switch reverses the polarity, and the direction of the motor, to make the window go up and down. In other words, one is power, and the other is ground to go up, and the reverse is true for down.

Thanks GT500KR.  So in order to bench test the motor I could just attach a wire to a battery + post and a wire to a ground and the motor should work?

Thanks Mark

Be advised. Those motors generate a lot of torque and draw a lot of current.

Yes,

But use as large, or larger gage wire as the existing wires on the motor to power it, and place the motor in a vice or other fixture before testing. I like to pull the gear and dogs out, and let the motor run for a few minutes in each direction to clean up the brushes. Then inspect, replace and pack new grease in the transmission.
