67 Interior Dye
« on: September 02, 2017, 05:29:03 PM »
I am looking for suggestions on interior paint/dye for a 67 dash pad.  Its for a T-Bird but I believe they are the same dark red used on the Mustang.  Any suggestions on rattle can?  I have never sprayed from a guy.  I probably could if I had to.  Thanks.

KevinK, SEM makes dyes for vinyl and seperately for plastic parts. It is one of the best products I have used. Make sure you get a can of the "Prep," that is appropriate for your type of part (vinyl or plastic). Since you are working on the dash, you will want the vinyl prep. SEM makes a number of reds so check their paint chips. SEM is truly a dye and not a paint. It is very easy to use but make sure to follow the prep directions to the T and wear gloves to keep fingers oils off the part. I have parts I dyed over 10 years ago that have not cracked or faded and held up beautifully. I can't recommend it enough. NPD sells SEM products and I believe Summit does also. It is a possible the local auto parts store stocks some as well. Good luck with your project.

I have used SEM dyes several times. Short term they were fine. Long term not so much. I have dyed  an 85 tan dash pad three times now and the darkened areas bleed thru in a few years. No problems with it sticking. Hard plastic parts like seat belt sleeves seem to scrape off. I even let them sit for a month. I have tried lacquer paint on hard plastic (new repro) and not much better.  Mostly, I wanted the correct color red with having to do spray tests.
