re-painting 66' styled wheels
« on: August 14, 2017, 09:58:45 AM »
Does anyone know if they make a template to mask off the 66' styled wheel in order to repaint the dark charcoal color?? I have no probelm hand taping them but could make better use of my time than spending a couple hours of masking.  ;D
I had heard someone makes a set for the magnum 500s, thought I might get lucky finding a set for the 66' styled wheel??  Thanks!

Take the time.

Let me expand. I made a "mask" for one section out of paper about 1/4 inch smaller and traced it on a sheet of paper with a black felt tip so I had five per sheet. Then I used my copier to make duplicates and cut them out with scissors. Steel wool the wheels to remove the old paint and mask away. That's one method.

Yeah, I'm thinking that will be my only solution. Since these are the 66 wheels with the painted black rim, it sounds that dark charcoal is the correct color choice. One last question, is primer typically used ?? The originals don't appear to have any primer underneath.  So maybe use a self etching primer for good adhesion?

I taped up the chrome on mine, leaving rolled edges to create a soft paint line.  Then used VHT argent paint from a rattle can, after scuffing the untaped portions of the wheel.  Turned out very nice and only took a couple of hours, total.

Never thought of rolling the edges, good tip. I was going to make a template cut out to mimic the soft edges and factory look but my luck it would get overspray where I wouldn't want it. I'm assuming Ford used a template for this application.
Thanks Midlife.
