Topic: Door Hinge

Was there slight a difference in the door hinge design in 1965 and 1966?  Reason I ask is that in the boxes of parts for my 1965 fastback (SJ/2.13.1965) I've come across a black hinge that is slightly different from the red ones that came off my Rangoon red car.  You can see the difference (I sincerely hope) in the attached pictures where the red one has a 90 degree cut in the front where the black one has more of a 45 degree cut.  And one more question: is there a proper and safe technique for adding a new hinge springe?  Thanks, Ron

Use zip ties to compress the inner parts of the spring, then install.  Then cut the zip ties.

How did you compress the new, compact, extremely stiff/strong spring enough to secure it with zip ties?  My first thought would be a bench vice, but that could be a delicate and dangerous procedure.  Ron

That's the biggest design difference visible. There is a transition sometime in 1965 from the square end to the angled end. The holes are the same.

I'm using Windows 7, on a desk top, with an Intel i7 processor, and a wired mouse. I've been told that some laptops, tablets and phones don't do as well in some cases.

Looked through my pictures and this appears (just based on the collection I have at the moment) that the change over at San Jose was around

Lowest VIN car I have record of with the beveled hinges 5R140504
Highest VIN with the square edged hinges 5R187778

What I found most interesting was that when you had one style (for example beveled) all the hinges on the car were all the same style. No mixing of the two styles which (from the supply side of things) is interesting since one might expect that the plant would use up the old and transition to the newer style as supply ran out or at some point mixed the two. Like bolt head markings in some transition ranges.  Seems to suggest intent.

Do have one anomaly, a pretty late 66 built at San Jose that had square edge hinge.  But only one

Thanks - that example is certainly in the "gap" that showed up in my search. There should IMHO be a time period where one style was replacing the other. Still is interesting that we've not see a mix on either (top different than bottom for example) side. So far the pattern is suggesting intent
