weatherstrip black plastic retaining pin
« on: April 16, 2017, 09:47:40 AM »
As I'm installing weatherstrip I see that I don't have black plastic retaining push pin/clip with the Christmas tree type barbs.  I looked at Jim's fastener list and don't see them based on my search criteria.  I can't find in the NPD catalog or web site.   I did not find them in the 1969 version of the Autolite standard and utility parts catalog.

AMK's website shows the Ford weathertrip pin as part B-13165, and GM as B-10650.  Both pictures attached.

The ones I've pulled out of several 67 Mustang doors look like the AMK GM ones, with the Christmas tree type barb arrangement, not the Ford ones.

What is the experience here?  What have you used as a replacement?

Thanks, John

John I think there may have been different styles used in the assembly plants. I think San Jose used the Ford push type and Dearborn the Christmas tree type. Not sure about Metuchen. The 68 I just parted was a Dearborn car and had the Christmas tree style.
The Christmas tree style uses a smaller hole.
One of our  San Jose 68 HCS had screws instead of the pins.

Thanks Marty, the pictures are from a November 66 Metuchen car.  I'll compare the hole diameter between that and my Dec San Jose.

Don't recall ever seeing the push pins with the recess/dot on a San Jose 67-68

As I'm installing weatherstrip I see that I don't have black plastic retaining push pin/clip with the Christmas tree type barbs.
The only ones I have in my plastic parts box are the ones used to hold on firewall pads (1/4 inch dia, 1 inch long), possibly aftermarket, but I don't know much more.
I looked at Jim's fastener list and don't see them based on my search criteria.
What's listed come mostly from the Osborn Assembly manuals, and from the 75 MPC filling in "gaps".
I did not find them in the 1969 version of the Autolite standard and utility parts catalog.
Point of info: The Standard Parts Catalog lists only hardware part numbers, 5 or 6 digit, a dash, a "S" with a finish or variation set of numbers. The pins have a Ford engineering part number, C1AB-6220807, and would not be listed.
AMK's website shows the Ford weathertrip pin as part B-13165, and GM as B-10650.  Both pictures attached.
2014 catalog, page 159.
The ones I've pulled out of several 67 Mustang doors look like the AMK GM ones, with the Christmas tree type barb arrangement, not the Ford ones.
I think some pictures and basic build info is needed, year, month, plant, model, etc.
(The cars with these GM type pins may have been built by GM - OK, maybe not.)  ;)
Jim
PS: I've looked in the 75 MPC and it is severely lacking in door weather strip illustrations. I can find doors in sheet metal, and door hardware in the body sides section (20124-25) but without weather strip.

I check some of my doors and was surprised that I found that all were the same. The first is a June 68 San Jose unrestored car that had the dimpled Christmas tree type. The second is a December 67 Metuchen  unrestored car that had the dimpled Christmas tree type. The third is a May 68 Dearborn parts car - drag car unrestored that had the dimpled Christmas tree type. I do not have any unrestored 67s to look at right now.

These are much much smaller than those that hold the firewall pad in place.  They are not 69 grille push pin rivets, the small dot on the head can be misleading.

I checked two Metuchen doors (Nov 66) and four San Jose doors (Dec 66 and unknown).  The two with known dates are unrestored.  They all have the same sized holes.

The two larger holes for the small rubber seal I would associate with the vent window are 0.246" in diameter.  The rubber seal has two molded in plugs that fill those holes.

The smaller hole associated with the door weatherstrip is 0.128" diameter.  I picked up a package of four plastic push pins (AMK Ford Style) and they are way to big in diameter to even think about starting through that 0.128" diameter hole.

Will stop by painter's supply tomorrow to see what they have.

OK some decent news.  Picked up some Au-ve-co product retainers, part AP11120 "GM retainers".  Look like the AMK versions referred to as...GM retainers.  Looks like a limited gene pool.

Anyway the dimensions when compared to the factory Ford part are close enough for me, see the details in the attached picture.

The key differences are in the head, what can be seen when installed.  Instead of a circle with the letter "C", there is a line dividing the head in half.  Plus there is no bevel on the edge.

Not sure why my pictures are rotated from what I see on my computer once uploaded here.  Any clues?

I'll bet you used a cell phone camera, and it's a lot smarter than you so it "rotated" the pictures to be normal. Oh course, the camera could be just plain obstinate.
The pins may have been pre-installed on the weather strip by the vendor, and approved by Ford, as long as they worked. Again, weather strip documentation is sparse.

I finally pulled my original Dec 66 SJ weatherstrip out and was able to salvage two of them.  Pictures attached.

The pins I find on '68 Dearborn cars look like the AMK illustration for the Ford push pin.

Those pictures look just like what I pulled from my November 66 SJ doors AND a December 66 SJ pair of extra doors I have. All mine broke though, brittle from the dessert heat.

My Nov 66' manufactured 1967 Shelby uses the push version at top. The carpenter manufactured door seals are also supplied with the upper type. However, the ones supplied with the Carpenter seals are larger diameter than the hole made in the door and door jamb. I had to order smaller ones from AMK.
