1969 s code "390 4V Intake"
« on: April 13, 2017, 08:45:54 PM »
I have a question about what intake is the right one for the 390 4V motor? There are S code intakes or regular intakes, Not sure what would have come on my car originally? It has C8AE-H heads date code 9C19, Block is WI date code 9C10, Trans is 4speed Top loader C8AR 7006-D W2 TUG M3, Got any clues? Dearborn MI, Body, Motor & Trans have Vin stamped and they all match. Marti Report only says 390 4V Motor.

First welcome to the site. Hope you find the information for your concours questions here.

Your car I understand was an S code 69 engine which would have come with the S code 4V intake for that year. That would have been the regular, factory intake. Not sure what the "regular intake" your referring to unless your comparing it to the 390's used in other Ford applications that year. Some of those would have been the same as the Mustang one (example, Cougar, Cyclone ....)

What is the casting/engineering number from the one you currently have installed?

Understand the Marti report states (390 4V) but the vin will still have S so they are both the same thing given the car and application

C9ZE-9425-B would be the correct casting number on the intake. It might be a tough one to find. The [8K9] dated intake on my Cougar does Not have the large 'S' on it. Earlier 390 4V intakes have a large 'S' cast into the front by the main casting number and are commonly referred to as S-Code Intakes even though they were also used on 1966-Newer Passenger Car 428 Motors. Your car is an S-Code car due to the 5th digit of the VIN which signifies the 390 4V Engine.

Purple arrow - is where the date code will be found. This one has a November 27, 1968 date

Green arrow is the engineering number - you can make out the last part of the original letters/numbers ;)

Agree with Andrew that you are likely assuming that the 69 S code intake has features of the earlier intakes.

Here's a shot of the intake from the Mustang Tek site.

It is interesting to see the change in the demand for the 390 intake compared to 10-20 years ago. It was not uncommon to find one of the 390 intakes learning up against a wall or trash can after a larger swap meet because people did not want to lug the boat anchor home after not selling at the swap meet.It was also not uncommon to see 25.00-50.00 price tags on them because of lack of demand too.  More people wanting to restore back original has change that to a large extent IMO. It is still a hard to sell item but to a selected few compared to a CJ cast iron intake . I haven't seen any left for trash for many years  now.

The C9ZE-B intake is the correct intake for the 1969 390 IP 4v, as Jeff posted below. My original 390 was built in NJ at approx same time period as yours.
If your car is still original and has not been stripped of all its paint be very careful and document the car. It has marking on the chassis and motor that will be the only way to identify factory options. Start your restoration the old school way. Clean very slowly and document.  For example the block will not have a cast in code to identify it. It will be color coded. The color code is located in the archway the starter motor sits in. There will be marking underneath the blue paint of the motor to Id option put on it. Note that in early 69 there where many running changes being made and each plant may have used different methods that have been lost to time. Feel free to contact me anytime if you wish.

I took a look at my 68 Mercury Parklane that came with a 428.  The intake has the big "S  C8AE
                                                                                                                                           9425-F

I didn't see a date code on it.  Would this be the correct one for the Mercury?

Thanks Mark

For a different car that the one in the thread, even if it were a Mercury S code ;)

The intake is not what Marti Report shows. The intake is aluminum Offenhauser 360, and carb is C9ZF-E Autolite.
