A J code 1968 engine was a 302-4V. Cylinder heads have a "4V" cast under the valve covers. True thermactor smog cylinder heads for the 302-2V or 302-4V, have individual drilled and tapped holes for the smog tubes.
289 smog heads do not have 4 drilled and tapped holes for smog tubes. Used same smog design as 1966-67 California.
I believe that those heads had the single injector hole at the right hand front and left hand rear for the air inputs.Ford used the four hole per head thru out 1966 in California for all 289 engines (except the HP which was exempt) and into 1967. Sometime in mid 1967 production (Jan-Feb 67?), the 289 heads changed to the single input port. As soon as the exemption for smog tests for cars built before 1974 was put into effect, the four hole types were pugged, or swapped for non-smog types.Jim
My guess is it is an early 1968 J code motor from a DSO with smog. Heads are 7L2 and 7K31. Engine tag shows 289 C 67 -14 and a code of 250A which is a 4V.
