1964 1/2 Muffler Outlet Pipe
« on: March 18, 2017, 12:09:08 AM »
My coupe ( 64 1/2, 260 ) is missing it's muffler outlet pipe ( tailpipe ).

I see no signs of it ever having a hanger to support the original outlet pipe.  Were these merely attached to the muffler and dangling or should it have a hanger as depicted in TSB 1090-1, Group 12 - figure 33 ?

I purchased an outlet pipe, hanger and clamp as depicted in the TSB from CJ Pony Parts but the hanger doesn't reach the tailpipe from where it should be attached to the frame rail ?

If someone could please post up some pictures of their 260 cars muffler, outlet pipe and hangars I'd appreciate it !

Thanks !

I believe it hung free from the factory.

This is from one of Mike's unrestored cars.  I believe this is the ivy green coupe when he was up in Vegas for the 50th

Thank you for the pic.

Odd that the factory didn't bother to support the pipe and that a hanger is depicted in the TSB.

The assembly line setup had the tailpipe welded to the muffler outlet, so not really anywhere for it to go.  Guess the engineers determined it was rigid enough.

I remember a discussion about this particular single exhaust pipe hanging down too low. I'm not sure if it was that the pipe was welded to the muffler at the wrong angle or the muffler itself was mounted at the wrong angle. Just something to consider.

That tail pipe ha nags in the correct position. On both this car and my convertible. The mufflers are tilted at a slight angle due to the hangers on the drivers side having stretched rubber. Not bad for 50+ year old rubber parts.
