Torsion rods retainer

Hi guys, I would like to know if this part was used in all cars/plants or depending which model and plant.
My San Jose 200 Hartop does have it, but my Dearborn 289 Convertible does not.  Should it have it..?

My dec 1, 65 San Jose convertible does not have it. As I believe you mentioned your car was a few months newer it was likely a running change.

There are differences on the duel exhaust versions between assemblyline so it stands to reason there is for single exhaust too.

By model do you mean body type?  If so no not all body types used the clamp no matter what plant
For example fastbacks have completely different torsion rod arrangement and number of rods

Appears to just be a coupe verses convertible details. Here is another example from the 149xxx period

I have Josep's '66 Convertible at my house now. As I was driving it from Grand Rapids, MI to Lampasas, TX I was passing an 18 wheeler on I55 in Illinois when I heard what sounded like a gunshot. Thoughts of engine backfire, tire blowout and radiator hose blowout raced through my mind but nothing was amiss. I pulled off at the next exit and walked around the car looking for something wrong but there was nothing to be seen so I continued onward through the night. A day or two after I got home I opened the trunk and the lid wouldn't stay up. Then I saw one of the torsion rods laying in the floor of the trunk and it dawned on me that that torsion rod springing free from its restraints was that gunshot that I heard back in IL.

I noticed that there is no clamp in the center of the two rods and there is no place to attach that clamp that is advertised as being appropriate for both coupes and convertibles. I dug out my 1965 Body Assembly Manual (the Osborn reproductions) and at least for 1965 the manual shows what appears to be a 1/4" wide strip of metal that loops around both rods and is attached to the bodyworks above the rods with a screw. The part number shown for the strip of metal is C5ZB-76448A02. I don't know if that O is a zero or a capital O and the same O is used in the manual for both letters and numbers. I have googled the C5ZB number and there are no responses at all.

Has anybody ever seen the C5ZB part used on a '65 or '66 ragtop?

This is the CJPP part that absolutely does not fit a convertible.

Would be a 0 - (zero) in that context

Not that I recall. Guess your asking (considering the project) Dearborn only or are you looking for observations not directly related to your/Josep's problem?



We're kind of mixing two different years and different body styles. Will continue watching to see if we need to break off the conversations in the future.

Just got done checking my pictures of 65 Dearborn convertibles and found nothing holding the springs midway to the trunk panels.  Just the wrap that kept them from clanging or buzzing against each other.

In later years on some body types the two springs were held together but not to the car - possibly to address the issue.

OK, thanks for checking.
Josep's car has the wrap around one of the rods.
And in my '65 Body Assembly Manual Ford shows a strip of metal looped around the two rods and screwed to the bottom side of the panel between the convertible well and the trunk lid. The rods are not pulled up against the bottom side of that panel. They are hanging there in thin air but they do have this metal strap looped around them.

For whatever its worth...

Both My Dearborn '65 (June) and Dearborn '66 (July) convertibles have absolutely nothing in the middle holding up the Trunk Torsion Rods..

You posed a great question though... Thanks for asking it!

PS: I believe that there was only 1 wrapped rod which was the rod mostly on the bottom since both rods cross.

Both my Dearborn convertibles only had one Anti-Squeak/Anti Rattler wrap and it was on the most bottom rod on both vehicles.  The top rod is left bare I believe.

Since we are sharing information, I'll share what my 65 Dearborn coupe has. Scheduled build date of April 19. From the 697xxx period.
