Topic: Black pliable strip.

Hi all,

I'm chasing the black pliable strips that go between the fuel tank and body, Inner and outer fenders where they meet along the top where the bolts go through and also for the splash shields. (Have I missed anywhere?) Can anyone help me by letting me know what its called and where I can get some? Ebay?

Strip caulk.  Should be available at O'Reilly or Autozone...

MANY parts suppliers offer it as well, NPD, VCM, etc. so you can add it to your next parts order.

Don't use the current 3M strip caulking, they have changed their formula and it has the consistency of butyl sealant.  Way too gooey and sticky.  I have found old stock in the checkered flag logo box that is like original.  Otherwise, there might be other brands out there.

I just used this stuff on my '65 Gas tank this last week and it worked out fine.. I did not find it too gooey...sticky yes.....The trick is not to use it in direct sunlight..  If you put the box in the fridge overnight, It will harden the material a bit though I did not need to do that.  It is exactly like the 3M butyl windshield sealant and is probably the same exact stuff.. no matter, It does the job fine just the same I have found.  Just my 2 cents...  I got mine from VCM...

I'm sorry, but the new 3M stuff is terrible, I can't believe that anyone would find it acceptable.

Could there be variations in batches?  I bought some of the 'new formula' to seal taillights so I guess I'll see how sticky and gooey it is.  Is the old formula the same consistency just stickier?

The older style used to be normal strip caulk.  Any of the 3M boxes I have bought in the last few years are the sticky butyl crap.

I can't personally vouch for it but I've heard of a number of people (in other forums) being happy with the Eastwood strip caulk product.  The reviews on their own site are very favorable too.

- as shown in the above link. Get in the habit of using the original manufacturer's stock number. "Most" of the time that works.

Wonder if working a little corn starch into the stuff with consistency issues would like it does in other materials?

I purchased some 3M strip caulk back in August 2016 and started using it in October/November 2016 and thought it appeared like and performed like normal strip caulk. I have been using right up until this past Sunday 2/12/17 and it performs like normal strip caulk. I should mention that my garage is not heated and the temperature is usually between 20 and 40 degrees F.
