Topic: New Pony in the stable.?

Hi guys, I am considering the purchase of a new pony to my stable. It is a late 65 convertible 200 that looks very good and is almost ready to go, it just need the underneath reinforcement panel, the adjust of one door and a front brake leak. It's very stock but has some parts that are not original to the car like the fog lights.. Even so, the car looks in very good shape, with all the floor panels being replaced.
The question is, some PO repaint it and took no care of the door plate, and resprayed it all over.! Is there a way to remove the paint and bring the original plate again to life..? I know I can get a repo, but wanted to know if there's a way to recover it. Some pics attached...

Depends on the condition of the tag before they painted the car, what kind of paint and prep they did before painting it. Often in my experience I was able to carefully ship away the body color since they had not sanded or prepped the surface much of it was simply sitting on the tag.

Just what has worked for me - of course if the tag was well worn before the paint its still going to, at best, be worn after you remove the paint

Try gasoline on a rag first. That might get rid of the top layer. Paint stripper might go through and remove the black or gray on the dataplate its self

   As Jeff stated, typically little or no prep work is done to promote adhesion by those who spray over hardware and data plates.
 
   Try wiping it with alcohol so the paint is clean, then apply tape or a bumper sticker (strong adhesive) to the plate. Really rub it on to make it stick. Leave it overnight, or longer so it bonds well. If you're lucky, some, or all of that paint will come off when you remove it.

   High pressure air and a blow gun can work as well. You might blow some of the paint off the door at the same time.

Normally would find a defect in the coat (like it appears there may be one in the lower left) get under the paint with a small nylon or wooden tool and start carefully pushing and proding until you get a section to lift or chip off. Get creative, change angles and a little at a time - unless a big section chooses to give way all at once. Metal tools or a heavy hand will likely produce damage to the surface or the printed nature of the original tag if any is still there

Could always remove it and treat it like others have offered. Just get some new rivets and replace it once done
