Lowers were bare steel before being dipped up to about the ball joint (it varied but stopped around the strut rod holes) . Uppers were bare steel and not painted. Innershafts were a darker heat treated steel. They were both grease filled before plugs were installed instead of grease zerts.

Upper control arms should be bare steel.
The lower control arms are also bare steel with about 2/3 dipped in black paint.

Just like Bob said....

what about the spring seat and the strut rods. what shut the finish be on them.

Two different metals, different ways each was made and because of that two difference finished look.

Strut rods would be heat treated forged pieces whole front spring seats were bare steel bent and formed into the piece .

Strut rods would have a darker finish so I use gun bluing repair fluid as mentioned in those threads and articles that have been mentioned in you prior threads

The spring seats would look bare new steel with shinier areas where the metal was bent from the stretching and from the contact with the dies

I again use the gun bluing after the metal is stripped and smoothed if it needs that. Then steel wool applied rather than dipped or rag/brush applied for the heat treated applications then worked with new steel wool for the highlights and lightening of the overall metal to that look I'm aiming for

As mentioned has been covered in those other posts ;)

Since both of these examples have rubber makes up part of the assembly I only warm the part up a little then add a protectant oil like Boeshield. Coat it well, allow it to be pulled into the metal then wipe it off or zip it up in a bag or wrap with plastic wrap until I'm ready to install the part

Jeff already answered about the spring seats and the strut rods. The motor mounts are upper half black (rubber  ,paint etc.)the lower half was bare metal. The picture pretty much shows the dividing line . I will add that the the eyelet portion of the motor mount where the bolt goes through is bare metal. Anticipating your next question ,the chassis mounts on the frame side are all bare metal.

Yellow at the tip of the ball joints is pretty typical. You'll find some on service replacement upper a arms but would not suggest repeating those.

Spindles often had numerous marking based on type of spindle/application year and other things. You'll find some examples shown in other threads but many will not apply to your car

Assuming that you've already restored, colored, replacement the machine surfaces and the test spots already - just don't add the protectant until after the marks

Try Phosphating 101 - http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=4624.0
And Painting A Arms - http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=3704.msg20096#msg20096
The sample upper A Arms are 65 and 66 which get painted, yours are not. The process to get to painting stage would be the same.

Looks like those have been plated and possibly lightly tumbled in ceramic, then assembled. My process is different and return a slightly different finish but of course the methods often depend on what you starting with.
