1969 F code San José rear tie down Brackets

Hello. I goeing too restorat my REAR TIE DOWN BRACKETS Butt what is the correct finish On Them i could find something

Semi-gloss black originally is what we typically find on San Jose cars.

65-68 at least will check 69 in the mean time. Do have a 69 single exhaust bracket with black paint on it - in pictures but only one so far

I have a single exhaust pair in weathered yellow zinc finish.
No idea what specific year or plant they came from though.
Were these parts dipped or spray painted?
Chassis black I presume?

Most of my tie-down brackets came from oldford dealerships back years ago in my travels & all short single exhaust brackets are bare steel but I found many dual exhaust long square corner type out west & they were all black.  Dual exhaust cougars had 2 short bare steel lh-rh tie-down brackets

my ones has never been black. i could see my ones has never been takking of the car before.and when i clean it from rustprotection and other things, and than i could see it never have been black. its lock like they just was bare steel.

No argument here re bare steel for non San Jose cars.
It's weird my single exhaust set is yellow zinc.
The cost of the plating on a temporary item makes no sense.
I bought them from Israel, either it's an export thing or an over zealous previous owner restoration.

Too bad you don't have some Evapo rust to soak it in.


Did check through my pictures and don't have a ton of them to offer and like yours they are old and well worn by the elements. Best we can do is to compare other surfaces in the same picture for comparison. Its interesting that if the finish is different on single exhaust plates it suggests that they may have had different suppliers for the dual and the single exhaust styles and the finish is a change from earlier years.

Of course you always can have that possibility that some of the returned plates make their way back into the system but the single exhaust style didn't cause the objectionable noises and rattles - the reason for removing them.

Here are so of the better pictures to aid the discussion unfortunately the matting surface would be more telling - that and the frame there

As suggested, a rust dissolver such as what has already been named, EvapoRust. There are other products similar on the market. I found a concentrated version where 1 gallon makes 16 gallons. Identicle in quality at a much better price than the aforementioned product. It's called Rust 911. They sell another protectorent to preserve the bare steel too or as others on the forum use Boshield, available in a spray can.

Depends on what access and tool you have for guys with ceramic tumblers/vibrators that would be their choice. Without that access a rust remover, followed by a look at the finish and coloring - adjusting with different processes then reoiling. to protect. What you looking for would be the same look and finish of a new piece of unplated bar or plate steel you would find at a metal shop or even your local hardware store.
