NOS C5AE-8505-C Water Pump....Questions....
« on: December 05, 2016, 11:20:47 AM »
Hi,

Somebody has for sale this NOS C5AE-8505-C WATER PUMP..... he said this is the true original, not rebuilt and has the correct paint markings.....date code April, 1965. What do you think? Is it really the "Holy Grail"? Why can we bother for the paint markings in this pump, if it should be painted engine black? I must say I haven't seen any NOS water pump with 65 date code.

And finally, what does it mean the number that is below the part number? In this case, it has number "1", but my original water pump has number "5"... ???

I appreciate your comments,

Regards
Luis

Looks like the real deal, not a rebuild.  The 1 or 5 are probably just casting or form ID's.

Yes, the paint marks would most likely get obscured.

The hi-po version would be much more valuable.

This is the April 65 pump in my 65 GT350. As you can see it has a 4.

Thanks,

So, if it's in fact the real deal, what would be a reasonable price for getting it?

Minimum $250, up to $400 depending how bad you want it.

Keep in mind that the casting is identical to a K code water pump.  The impeller could be changed out and it would be worth more.

Also, I would rebuild or have it rebuilt before putting it on a car. Guess how I know?
Several times I have had NOS pumps in boxes leak from day one. The seal may dry out

While looking for some stuff for my 65 I tripped over this water pump.  No box but the seller insisted that it was NOS and had never been mounted.  It is tight with no wiggle or noise.  The impeller has 8 blades, the body is cast with C5AE-8505-C, #2, FoMoCo, Sheffield and 64 in a circle with 7 dots.  Little help with the particulars ?  Correct for my 65 GT ?  Date is probably a little early ?  Semi-Gloss black ? Thanks, Brian

Right for your GT? Date is too far off IMHOAlmost made a year before your car may have been. It would likely be closer to when  the engine was assembled but still off by allot of time. Its late I'm pretty sure I'm missing one other detail

Originally it would have been painted attached to the timing cover so it would be engine color

Given the current condition it it were NOS it really would make little difference

Your car would have the cast iron water pump that is harder to find
C5OE-8505-B
Used for a short period of approx 3 months at the end of the 65 year
Also you would have the ribbed timing cover to support the heavier pump
Cheers

OK some interesting stuff.  C5OE-C dated a year to early.  The car was picked up at the dealer on May 29.  So could be a matter of days between the B and C versions ? The timing cover cast engineering numbers would help but I can't see them.  What I can see is the timing pointer is bolted in place, dip stick access is on the horizontal, frontal, right side and there seems to be a backing plate between the existing water pump and the timing cover.  Some help with these clues would be great.  Thanks, Brian

Bolted on timing pointer began with the use of the C8 cast engineering number, late production 67's have been found with them but not correct for any 65 that I know of.

Thank you Richard.  The hole just gets deeper the more I dig.  I do have a C5OE-1 timing cover, 66 casting date, and the cast in place timing mark.  So re-group and take stock ?  Brian,

Thanks - it was a little late last night for me to double check but that is what I was thinking at the moment.  Knew someone else would fill in ;)

Looking at Bob Mannel's book, the "Small Block V-8" you can get stock numbers, casting numbers, change level, effective dates and a lot of other information on water pumps.
