October 20th 1964 San Jose Engine bay details please
« on: December 05, 2016, 03:48:30 AM »
Hi guys,
My wife's SJ convertible is getting re-restored after a PO had already "restored" it back in 85. I'm looking at getting as many of the finer details as correct as possible.
Its a PS and AC car. I would like to see pictures of decal placement and anything else that may be correct for the engine bay detailing that you guys feel should be pointed out. I have all colours/finishes sorted out. (Just got some Corrosion X delivered!) Would also appreciate some help with the correct water pump as ours is aftermarket.

Thanks,
Dan.

Did you find any traces of holes in your fender apron indicating you had the Eaton power steering pump with the remote reservoir?  if not, you might have had the regular Eaton pump with the special brackets that make it sit lower to clear the compressor.  I believe my car had this as mine was build 10/29/64.  Below is the topic in the wanted ad along with pics of some cars built in October:

Dan we'll need to know what engine the car has

With the Corrosion X I've found that you DON"T want to get it on rubber items so be careful

How silly of me Jeff,
Its a 289 A code and C4. Did these all have Eaton pumps at this time?

Will collect some examples and post

May post some here since we already have an example there. At least the service instruction decal is posted there ;)

I don't think so as all the holes I have are accounted for Chris. Any pics of the fender bracket in situ or holes in the fender? Were all SJ cars built at this time with PS fitted with an Eaton pump?

Not allot of engine compartment decals when you compare them to other models and years

As for additional details here are a couple

This example suggest that during this time period and plant they were blacking out the top of the steering box

Also they were using dark color sealant between the hood hinges and hood

Hope this helps

It does Jeff. Thanks a lot. The service decal seems to have been applied a lot straighter than my Dec 7 65 NJ car's was. Almost 90 degrees difference!

So is it fair to say that they only installed Eaton pumps during this time in late 64 at SJ?

Jeff what was the purpose for sealing between the hood and the hinge...I've never noticed that detail before.

Honestly have no idea. Have found this and a more brownish sealer used on a number (no pattern) of unrestored first year Mustangs at San Jose. Since its always on both it seems to be intentional just don't see the purpose but maybe there was a worker or engineer that had one
