hello can someone tell me about the spindels on my 1969 coupe was they just rotte steel or was they phosphate and oil coatet  from the factory

The manufacturing process used to make spindles is they are forged steel, which uses an oil based heat quenching, then machined, which also uses an oil but a different oil type. The final look is dark on the non-machined surfaces from the forging, and shiny steel on the machined surfaces - axle, tie rod holes and ball joint holes. To reduce rust, wax may be sprayed over everything. Phosphate and oil is about as close as you can get on the non-machined surfaces,

+1 There are at least three threads showing originals and restored ones as well as discussions on how members achieved their results. How old the quenching oil was affects how dark and how thick the coating was. After that step you have the machining (producing shinny fresh surfaces in contrast) and test areas
