Topic: 68 Cyclone find

I have had an ongoing search for a decent 68 or 69 Cyclone GT for a while now.  I may have found one and I am making plans with the owner to go down and inspect it next week.  I know there is not much in the aftermarket for these models so I had hoped someone could give me some pointers on specific parts that are unobtainable in the marketplace today.  I know good hoods demand a premium and this one looks good minus the factory scoop, but holes are there and cut out is there.  From the pictures provided the body looks reasonably sound, but they are pictures.  It is a southern car and it has been parked indoors. Do not have details on the driveline and the owner was going to take a picture of the data tag prior to a death in the family this week.  I would appreciate areas to focus on when I get down to see the car. No driveline in it now, but that is not a big concern.

You might head over to Columbus this Thanksgiving weekend (and Columbus next spring) and/or Carlisle Pa next June to such  "All Ford" swap meets. There were SO MANY Cyclones, models I never even knew existed there at Carlisle this last June, You could not possibly regret the venture. MUCH easier to meet with those "in the know" at places like this but you should have a list and ask, ask, ask at these venues.

The 68 cars did not have a hood scoop to include the R code Cobra Jets.
Even the 351 W cars had scoops along with 390 and 428 in 1969.
The 69 scoop is common no problem to come up with one.

 A friend of mine is on a Mercury owners website. Not certain which one, but any Mercury exclusive site could answer some of your questions, I'm sure.

Interior pieces will be tough, door panels, dash pads, etc. Front aluminum trim parts might be spendy if you need them.
I sold a 1968 S code GT Cyclone project car to a friend. He still has it.
Has bucket seats, console, automatic, with power windows. White with red interior, spent its whole life in SoCal. Solid car, engine frozen, missing smog and Holley carburetor.
He and I were at a you-pull-it yard a few years ago. Found a 1968 Montego Brougham 4 door. Bought an excellent hood, fenders, and dash face (not pad) from that car. There might have been a grille and front bumper too.

I think that you would be money ahead to buy a 'done' car.

So I covered 1400 miles Saturday to look at 3 different cars. All of them were basket cases.  They were good parts cars, but nothing more. 2 -68's and 1-69 Cyclone and a 69 Torino.  I am still looking so if anyone happens to hear of one, please keep this posting in mind. I am not looking for anything rare or special. Just a plain old 68 or 69 cyclone with reasonable rust repair. Preferably a 302 or 351 car.  Thank you

Scott appreciate the advice.  I am leaning towards a heavily modified plan on this car.  Must of the underside will be swapped out for modern running gear.  My main focus is the shell and body structure.  I am finding several cars that are not worth much other than parts.  Have a lead on a SoCal car that the owner will be available next week (W/O 11/21/16). Interior modifications will be moderate to dash and front seats. back seat area will be extensively modified.  I keep looking in backyards and sheds. Someday something will turn up.
