I've redone a couple sets of originals.   Manganese phosphate and Boeshield works excellent on the non-plated half.  Looks just like Jim's.    Actually I phosphated both halves (inside and out - even the bores) and just painted the outer halves. They turn out beautiful, and seem to hold up well against flash rusting.
