Correct paint and headliner for a 65 palomino interior?
« on: September 17, 2016, 11:36:57 AM »
This is my first post.  I'm restoring a 65 FB which will have a standard (non-pony) palomino interior.  My first question is what is the correct headliner color?  Most of the vendors provide a parchment headliner.  Any opinions?

My second question involves the interior paint.  I've seen a number of variations out there in which the dash and steering column are the darker palomino color and some in which the lighter palomino color is used.  What parts of the interior should be painted the lighter palomino color and which should be painted the darker color?

Does anyone offer a correct palomino dash pad and windlacing or must it be dyed?  If the latter, which dye is recommended?

What color is correct for the carpet?  Most of the ones I've seen are some variation of tan/brown but some installations are red or other colors.

Lastly, what paint is recommended and does anyone have any tips for removing old paint from the non-metal pieces?

Thanks.

JKordzi,

I had my 5F07C restored several years ago and switched the interior from black to palomino deluxe.
For the carpet I chose Raylon weave, light saddle.
For the headliner I chose crater grain saddle.
For the dash pad you'll have to buy the black one and have it painted palomino to complement your dash.
I have palomino kick panels.
I have crater grain saddle sun visors.
The seat belts are the reproduction classic look saddle ones, but I have since found NOS light beige ones.
All parts were ordered from NPD.
The color of the metal dash and doors are a little lighter in the pics than in person.  The metal parts were sprayed with light palomino and the dash pad medium palomino.

hope this helps you out some.

When and where was the car built?  If it is early enough it could possibly have an off white headliner I believe (Jeff or Charles correct me if I am wrong).

Colored headliners first started showing up around Dec '64, roughly.  Anything before that would have been white.

I believe I posted some pics of Mike Murray's 4k original mile car with Palomino interior in the past.  If not, I'm sure Mike could help, he is mgmradio here on the forum.

It's very unlikely that you will get everything correct by ordering out of a catalog.  It will take a combination of getting the correct paint code for the interior and dying other parts with correct colors/shades.

Thought I posted these yesterday - Hmm must have pressed the wrong button - a few include Mikes car

You'll see some variation in the colors on the screen due to age, lightling, as well as settings on the camera and each monitor

Thanks.  As to when my car was built, it was an early 65.  I realize the early cars had a white headliner but I'd rather go with a colored one.  Matt chose a saddle headliner but most of the kits I see seem to include partchment with the palomino interior.  It looks almost saddle - I wonder if it's the same?

Matt's dash and steering column look like the light palomino but all other pictures I've seen seem darker.  I'm assuming the dash, steering column, and other interior pieces get painted medium palomino.  Anyone think that's a mistake?

I'll plan on dyeing the dash pad to match the medium palomino.

Still not sure about hte correct color for the windlace.  THe windlace looks like it's medium palomino, but I don't see anyone offering it.  I'm a little leary about dyeing it.  Any opinions on how partchment would look?

All palomino interior carpets seems to be some shade of brown.  Anyone have an an opinion if brown or saddle is correct?

Think originally they were pretty much the same. Age and digital pictures are likely not your friend at this point trying to figure out the color and tint from a distance. Wonder if any one has an old carpet and could offer a small sample for comparison to what is available?  Same with the windlace. Pretty sure there will be no good replacement/reproduction in color or in texture
