Is there a function for the extension past the threads on the original style heater hose fitting in the intake?

Sometimes they were crimped believe that was to restrict flow cant recall if your application had that feature originally on the water neck

Another possibility was maybe an engineer figured out it was better to take or introduce water for the heater from the center of the passage rather than the side or a combination of both of these purposes
