Dearborn car , was this arm bare steel or a zinc phosphate part ? I believe the catch to be a bare steel part.

Thanks Jeff, the rod does appears to be a gray phosphate. I will add this  with my  hood latch and shock tower caps for platting.   Will

Engages with the round rod /prop rod and holds the trap door in the up position

Owner of car in picture #1 possibly added the fold down option and forgot to include the retainer. (Notice no nutserts in the trunk hinge bracket Sure they wonder why the trap door doesn't stay up like others  cars but then the vast majority of time the trap door is down and maybe never noticed it missing

The book says -S2, phosphate and oil. No other known application for that screw, 55593-S2, on a 70. It was a -S8 on 67-68 radio brackets.

If I recall correctly I've seen a difference depending on assembly plant and when the car was assembled. Will mark this thread so I can do a little research and post the findings when I get time and access

The attaching hardware called out in assembly manual identifies a J or U nut similar in design (not size) of what was used to attach much of the front end of the car together. With the lip of the panel it would have to be installed on and the distance from the edge of the panel it appears we have identified a mistake on this page of the assembly manual IMHO

Looking I could not find a picture of a fold down sportroof without the sheet metal bracket that attached shown in the pictures above but a posted over on that sit did and his April 70 built car shows the insert nut I recall seeing being used for this application on cars I've seen. Many thanks to him for sharing
