Correct Muffler hanger for 65, 289, single exhaust?
« on: September 06, 2016, 04:34:32 AM »
I am converting back to a single exhaust on my 65 289. When i bought the car it had an aftermarket dual system but i found the old single exhaust muffler hangers in a box with old parts that came with the car.I bought new muffler hangers from NPD and on the driver side it´s a perfect match but on the passenger the new and old hangers are completely different. I don´t think that NPD has delivered the wrong part since it looks just like the single exhaust hanger that every Mustang part vendor offers for a 65. So the question is what hanger i really have? Is it Mustang or maybe some other Ford model? The hanger fits perfectly on the rear frame rail mounting location but it looks like there is and extra reinforcement plate welded to the rail. The same type of reinforcement plate is not visible on the driver side frame rail. Does an original 65 have this reinformcement plate? My car is an early 65 (Aug 10, 1964) and have a few of the 64 1/2 details. Can that has something to do with it? My own assumption is that a previous owner has used a hanger from another car and in order to fit it to the frame rail the extra plate has been welded in place. But before i start drilling new holes in order to fit the NPD hanger i just want to make sure that i am not messing with something that is actually original? If it is original does anybody know where to get the correct muffler hanger? Please take a look at the pictures and maybe some forum member can solve my little mystery
Best regards,
Per-Johan

These are the hangers for a OE, 66, 289 ' Y ' pipe exhaust system.  One bracket is different from your set up ?  Don't know if that's a 65-66 thing or not.  Brian

It must be a 65/66 thing. My 66 coupe has the above setup. the reinforcement plate on your 65 frame rail is different from my 66.

The large bracket on the right is the correct one for your car. It and the plate on the frame rail and the bracket are an early thing. The small bracket is for late 65 early 66. Also your car should not have a resonator in the intermediate pipe. The muffler and tail pipe should also be one piece.

Since the discussion pertains to my 65 too, I had to look what was on my car.   ;)

I had questioned the DS bracket but think I answered my own question.  I believe it would be the muffler bracket?

Does the PS hanger look factory?
