Fastback Carpet pieces ?
« on: September 01, 2016, 05:29:05 PM »
An intriguing question from the VMF site.  The car; 65-66 fastbacks.  The question;  did the lower, forward facing section of the interior quarter panel, nearest the door opening, have a separate piece of trim carpet ?  No trim carpet on mine but sure can see where one might get installed ?  Thanks, Brian

My 66 fastback did, as did the replacement carpet set.

There should be a piece of carpet there.

My 65 SJ FB did not.  Don't know what the distinction is...why some do some don't

Yes they were all suppose to get on installed at the factory. How each one was trimmed appears to be different based on plant and when the carpet was installed. Color likely had a little to do with the variation of dates as recorded. The originals are different from the common reproductions/replacements since the late 70's

Over time the attaching glue gives out and they fall, rot or just unravel in place. Sometimes the glue leaves a little evidence sometimes there is not a hint - maybe that is why those are missing - not enough glue

Been cataloging this details (especially for San Jose) for a long time.

When I enlarge the image posted, I see what looks to be remnants of glue on the face of the quarter trim.

+1   my 66' SJ fastback had these when I obtained it (with it's original ratty interior). Replaced it with what came in the repro carpet set. In my signature it says "March 66 built" but the stampings i'm seeing on the rockers and firewall sheetmetal look more like mid to late Nov. 65'

OK thanks, guys.  I think I may have known this once ?  Another tip that the aftermarket vendors don't always get it right ?  Brian

In general I've been finding on original carpet cars

65 - top and outer edge of this carpet section with the finished (serge edge) edge or no serge edges. Appears to be a time period and plant thing

66- all edges plain cut - no serge edges.

None with serge edges all the way around. Can get confusing with early carpet replacement  ::) Did one Shelby many years ago that had the carpet replaced at 6 months for some reason

Yes not sure what I would do if I had not started collecting and cataloging pictures long ago. Sure have come in handy and helpful to me
