64 1/2 K code rear axle shafts

Would the rear axle shafts on an early K code be tapered or straight?

Are you referring to the housing, or the axles themselves? The housing on all 64-66 Mustangs tapers at the spring-shock mounting plate. There might be a slight taper on the axles as well, only to allow the splines to be cut.

Aren't the 8" and 9" 28 spline axles the same for 64.5-66 V8 cars?

The base is obviously tapered for the bearing attachment.  Like Jim says, the ends with the splines have a very slight taper, probably to make it a little easier for the axles to fit into the carrier.

Talking specifically about the internal axle shafts.  All had 28 splines, but I am told that later production had no taper between the splined end and the flange on K codes, while others with 8 inch and 9 inch center sections had axle shafts that narrowed in between the flange and splined end.

Here are some pictures: shaft on the left is the later style no taper, the one on the right has taper.

My june 8th 64.5 K coupe has the axel as on the left in your picture no taper between the spline & flange, i would ask Fred Ballard for a detailed discription he is over at the hp po web site,

i think you read the post wrong i have the june 8th 64.5 K coupe its #( 6)  64.5 vin from top the  in the K code registry # (4) complete car from the top as two of the vins before my car are ony engines with vins there bodys are gone,

Nope I read it right. Congrats. We all know early June 64 was the start for K code coupes and yours is one of the first.

Thank you all for the feedback.  I posted this topic on the Hipo site.  If you believe the period Ford parts and cross reference manuals, up until some point in the 65 model year the axles for the all 8" and 9" used the same tapered axle shafts (Fairlane Carriers WCU, WDK, and Mustang V8 Carriers WCL, WCZ, WDT).  That said, what do the best documented original 64.5 HiPO cars have? The beefier axle shafts can be identified by "C4OW" molded into the center hub, while the tapered are "C2OW".
