Is PPG 22581 correct color code / formula for Honey Gold?
« on: August 15, 2016, 06:14:27 AM »
Hello,
I have a 65 that left the factory painted in Honey Gold (Mustang color code C) The car has been repainted twice by previous owners here in Europe in colors close to the original but not an exact match. The Paint Shops  have apparently had problems finding the original color formula.  Paint Ref.com   http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcodedisplay.cgi?make=Ford&year=1965&con=ky&model=Mustang&rows=50  has the following PPG code for Honey Gold: 22581. Is this correct?
Another option is of course to find a part of the car with original paint e.g. under the rear seat an scan the color. My challenge is however that i am not 100% sure that PO has not painted the inside also. Any "Honey Gold" owners in this form that knows what paint and paint manufacturer to use for getting as close as possible to the original?

Best regards,
Per-Johan

Per my charts, Honey Gold is Ford #M1736, DuPont # 4612L, or 4612, and for PPG (Ditzler), yes, 22581.

Hopefully you have an original sample to compare.  It's a difficult color to get right.

+1 on that.  Have a Honey gold fastback where the cowl section was repainted in 2004 and it was difficult to get it right.  The car was repainted sometime in the 80's over the original paint and I can see some of the original paint in some areas and it doesn't match, so they are technically three shades of "honey gold" on the car at this time but you would have to know where to look to see them...

I am starting to understand that  :)  If you do a google search on honey gold you get a huge variety of colors spanning from almost beige metallic to light green metallic. My car has been repainted twice and never in original color but colors that were close. Once by the original owner in US. Probably twenty years ago and then a second time 10 years ago when the car was imported to Sweden. The area under the back seat on top of the transmission tunnel seems to be original paint but i am not sure. When they repainted the car in US they might have sprayed the interior also. The paint job in Sweden was only a respray of the outside of the car. I have been able to localise the original owner in US so maybe he will have some answers for me.
Thanks for your input and advise.

Don't know the current formula, but Honey Gold is my favorite early color.

My '65 Vert was originally '65 Honey Gold... A previous owner repainted the car '65 Poppy Red which is the color it still is now.  One of these days, I'll return the car back to its original '65 Honey Gold color.  The paint on the car is still more than decent, but once it's shot a few years from now, it's going back to its original Honey Gold color.  Even though I love the '65 Honey Gold which is kind of a Greenish Gold color, It's not my favorite.  My favorite is actually the 1966 Sauterne Gold Mustang color.  I think that it looks better...but that's just me..

Regards,

Maybe try looking in areas not commonly sprayed again like underneath the dash pad or behind the interior panels.  I haven't taken my dash pad out but I did find the original color behind the interior panels as shown here:

Also when I took off the front valance and scrapped off some of the undercoating I cam across the original paint so they didn't take the car all the way apart when it was repainted.  If you are ever in the US you are more than welcomed to come by and inspect...

Under the dash pad up by the windshield frame is a good place.  I would caution a bit on the back-side of the valence as that may not be a full coat of paint.  Could have a different appearance if a bit transparent.

Charles is right on my Honey Gold 65 Fastback the only place where original paint survived was on the windshield frame and on the metal surface on the top of the dash on the drivers side. Otherwise it was all red or white due to re-paints. I don't know the codes but could get them from the painter.

I found out what my original color was (respray, no data tag). When I pulled the rocker moldings and more specifically the clips,  under the clips was a PERFECT color swatch.  As a matter of fact I still have it, since I replaced the fender, but kept the original.

I know, this is weighing late on this topic, but...

my local PPG guys (Martin Auto Color in Rancho Cucamonga) researched this for me and came up with two colors. The 22581 mentioned and 2326. My car had been repainted some time before 1974, so there were limited spots where the original color was available. The best I found was under the clips for the hood to cowl seal. The 2326 was an excellent match for the Honey Gold. The 22581 was too green.

My suspicion is that the 22581 formula was a match to a car that was original, but had faded over time, enhancing the green that was in the color. Just a guess.
